My computer seems to be slower. I've noticed that a message @ the bottom shows: Transferring data from m1.2.mdn.net or transferring data from bannerfarm.ace.advertising.com...what does this mean and how can i get rid of it. Could this be the cause of my computer being slower? Thanks

I am pretty much computer illiterate...i read what you recommended but it didn't make a lot of sence to me. Is there an easier solution? .... should i take my computer to a professional or is there a simple way to detect what you are trying to explain to me? thanks so much for being helpful

What you have is malware. I wouldn't swear on this, but it's probably easy enough to remove. My concern is that you don't have protection on your computer which means you probably have more problems than just that one piece of malware.

The first thing is do you know if you have any protection in the form of Antivirus protection and a Firewall. Maybe McAfee or Norton?

You would not be the first poster to go through MajorGeeks Malware removal procedure who stated they were computer illiterate. ;) So, no, I do not think you need to go to a professional. I think you can do it yourself. It is very well explained as long as you go through step by step.

First and foremost though, let us know if you have protection on your computer. :)

Our computer was purchased over a year ago @ Best Buys. They installed Trend Micro Virus & Webroot Spy Sweeper. I don't think my husband ever renewed after the year. Instead...he talked to his son, who goes to school @ IUPUI and put something on the computer that was free (not sure what it was or if it is still on the computer).

He took the computer back to Best Buys 2 mo's ago, since we purchased the extended warranty. They said the computer didn't have any virus & charged him another $29. They could do an ADR w/PSP for $140 & said it looked like software problems not hardware, which is what was warranted.

They ended up giving us another free Trend Micro and Webroot SpySweeper but said this could cause the computer do be even slower if it already had a spyware on it.

I have no clue how to even tell if we have spyware on the computer. The bottom right corner has a shield/Open Symantec Endpoint Protection. When I go into programs; I can't tell if it is downloaded or not.

So....can't really tell you if I have any spyware or not.
    1. Is there a simple way to tell if there is spyware?
    2. Do I need to be concerned about the Symantec Endpoint
    3. Should I try and run the 2 new programs Best Buy gave us? I don't know if
there is Spyware on it and sure don't want to add it & make the computer
    even slower or crash completely

I hope this makes some kind of sense. Thanks

Ok...it sounds like you at least have antivirus protection (the Open Symantec Endpoint).

Yes, if you have a paid version of Spysweeper, you should use it. It is very good. I use it and it does not slow my machine down. Do NOT install the Trendmicro. That is an antivirus/firewall suite and you should never run two antivirus applications (not to be confused with antispyware, which is what the spysweeper is).

If, your Spysweeper is paid, please install it and update it and run a scan.

Then you should install something like Spybot Search & Destroy http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

(Download and install it without letting 'Teatimer' be installed (you'll see an option during installation). Update it and run a scan.)

One or the other should pick up spyware on your computer.

As far as all this goes, other than helping you with installing or running the software, I really can't help you since this tends to fall under Malware and we have a forum and experts in there.

    1. Is there a simple way to tell if there is spyware?

Yes, run the scans with spysweeper and Spybot

    2. Do I need to be concerned about the Symantec Endpoint

No, hopefully that is the software your son installed. PLEASE open it and and make sure it is up to date or you are protected.

    3. Should I try and run the 2 new programs Best Buy gave us? I don't know if
there is Spyware on it and sure don't want to add it & make the computer
    even slower or crash completely

Again, do Not install the Trendmicro. DO install the Spysweeper as long as it's their Antispyware and not their Antivirus.

Good luck and if you have any other scanning or installation questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

After rereading your post, I realized that at some point you had Trendmicro and Spysweeper installed.

You should make sure Trendmicro is uninstalled by going into Add/Remove.

You should also uninstall the original Spysweeper. Hopefully, by doing that you can use the software Best Buy gave you and get a year subscription.
