Could this be a virus?

My wife got into a website with one of our computers that caused the computer to shut down. When I went to check it by running Spybot I only got one minor problem. I then tried to run McAfee to check for a virus, and I got a message that some file was missing or corrupt. I then ran an update on McAfee. Everything appears to work, and the message says the download is complete. However when you close the windown or let is self close on timeout the control center shows that the update was not completed.

The other similar problem I'm now encountering is that Windows (XP) is showing that there is an update to install. It goes through the normal routine on shutdown and appears to install the update. However on the next shutdown the icon is back again showing that there is an update to install...

Something seems to be preventing updates from occuring?? Any thoughts on this? And what I should try next.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your problems may or may not be malware. The best way to find out is below.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions. If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Note: If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

I have run through the routine, and am still having the same two issues; Windows Update icon shows it has an update to install at shutdown, but it does not seem to save. Also I can go all the way through the McAfee dat update and it says it is done, but the consol still indicates the update failed.

I've attached my logs from the various scans.

You forgot to attach the ComboFix log but it really does not matter. Your problems are not due to malware. I suggest that you post in the Software Forum for your Windows Update issue. You may want to try shutting down McAfee, especially the firewall as a quick test to see if it is interferring with Windows Update. Also could try using debugging tips that Windows Update normally gives when updates fail.

For McAfee update issues, you may want to look into a total uninstall and then reinstall. After uninstalling, you should run the below to make sure it really uninstalled since often it does not:

Sorry about the missed file. Hopefully attached this time. Post runing the XP cleaning process detailed in your post I also ran Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal, and then installed AVG Free 8.0 anti-virus software. I was thinking it was a registry issue but while WindowsCare did "fix" a number of issues, I still have the same problem. AVG did install and update properly and did find a few things. Webtrends & Tribalfusion tracking cookies, and a couple of trojan horses; Cliker.KDZ and BHO.DFJ.

Is there a free registry cleaner and repair utility that you recommend? WindowsCare or CCleaner?

I will try your suggestions on McAfee. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, but will go through the routine to check to be sure it is uninstalled this time. Hopefully it will work, as my version of McAfee is a corporate licienced enterprise verison that they are able to distribute to employees.

Thanks for your help in this,

    Ron

As I said, it is not really a problem since you are not having malware problems.

Cookies are not problems. You should not have installed AVG if you still had McAfee. This can really mess things up. As stated in the early paragraphs of the READ ME, you should never have more than one antivirus installed.

We rarely use them or suggest using them in the Malware Forum. CCleaner however is a big favorite of many people.

If you are going to try and reinstall McAfee, you will now need to uninstall AVG first and then cleanup all of McAfee using the uninstall tool.

As stated earlier, I suggest that you post in the Software Forum for any remaining issues with either Windows Update or McAfee.

Now we need to cleanup some items from running ComboFix.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combo-fix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combo-fix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combo-fix folder from combofix.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
