Resume advice needed.

OK Geeks, I am trying to get a new job. The new job is in another state, so my contacts are my friend who works there and a guy I need to email a resume to. I have my old resume, that I made using Open Office. How do I send it and a cover letter? Do I just copy and paste in an email? Or do I need to send the cover letter and resume as attachments?

I need to do this right the first time, just unsure of the best way to send it.

I would appreciate your advice on it. This could be a HUGE move for me. I would rather ask a stupid question here than have my resume just deleted.

I have usually just gotten jobs through word of mouth, meeting the owner, and getting a job. I am a little lost and like I said, I want to do this right.

I have the potential to make a TON of $ if I get this job. We are talking about the sun shining on a dogs rear end kind of money if I get it. Like STUPID money! This is one of those jobs you only get if you know someone, and I do!

My friend is part of the hiring process, so I can't ask him too many questions. So I come to my good friends here and just ask.

So, attachment, or copy and paste?

Thanks for your time, and keep good Kharma thoughts for Fred_G!;)

Definitely attachment. You want the professional and elegant formatting of your resume to survive the trip. Make the email a short cover letter, just to introduce yourself, and then write a longer one about why you are the obvious choice for this job, and attach that as well.

And of course, good luck! :)

    Any one else?

Thanks Mimsy. That is what I was thinking. Too bad I did my resume in Open Office, Windows does not like it. My folks have MS Office, Word or whatever it is... so if I have to, I can just retype it. I have to stop by and fix a DVD drive for them anyway!

I can't wrap my head around the numbers this job pays! Sure, I have to move a few states away from where I am at, but this is just, well serious money. I want to avoid any mistakes.

    Thanks.

Not only as an attachment, but saved as a PDF rather than a document. That way they don't need to have whatever software you've used to view it, and it's more secure.

But a pdf requires Adobe Reader right? I hate the Adobe reader. I use foxit. What if dude hates Adobe reader?

    Thanks for the info!

You should be able to save it as a pdf all the same... and the dude should have Adobe on his work computer, if this is corporate at all. Lots of companies put their important internal documentation (such as health plans and stuff) in pdf format.

Oh, and open you resume in OO, save it as a word doc, and then you wion't have to retype it. But you already knew that, right? ;)

I have folks I used to work for calling me offering me free loans to move. That is touching to me. I have a friend trying to get me hired. Looks like just a resume away from some good kahrma for Fred_G!

And we are talking about some bank here. Going from paycheck to paycheck to buying a house in a couple of years. Once I am trained getting 12k a year for a truck allowance... :yum

This is just STUPID money. I will take it though!

You only get one shot with a Resume... Want to make sure it is good!

As someone who regularly employs people and has to read through many atrocious resumes, make your letter and resume attachments and of popular software or a .pdf that anyone can read. Don't use Open Office. I use it at home currently not out of choice and it blows chunks. It works, sure, but meh...just don't do it. Make it as easy as possible for the reader to access, and as easy on the eye as possible to read - resume should not be over 2 sides of paper. Covering letter should be one side. Anything after that and you have lost the reader's attention.

Saving as PDF or MS Word attachment and a short email introductory note is probably the best way to go. Love or hate Adobe Reader, it is more or less, an industry standard, so it's very likely to be the most accepted, along with MS Word. They also retain a professional looking format, as said.

    Good luck, Fred.:)

I agree with everything said and will add one more thing....

Check your resume 10 times if you have to and have someone else check it 10 times but DO NOT HAVE EVEN ONE TYPO OR GRAMMATICAL ERROR IN IT. I know many people who interview and that is one of their main things they despise. They figure if you don't care enough to spell everything correctly you don't care too much about the job.

Btw, I live in this mystery state and went to college in the town of your link. :-D Awesome town.

    Good luck!

In case you don't have software to create a PDF file, here is a program that has worked very well for me with both XP and Vista. It creates a PDF printer. You can type the resume with any word processor you like and then just print it to the pdf printer. It will create a pdf file which you can e-mail.

    Best of luck!

I would definatly do PDF if your attaching a resume to an email as in word or other formats the recipient is likely in some cases not to have the font you used, unless you use a default like plain Ariel or Times Roman, if they dont have the correct font the formatiing will look bad and that is not a good start. With PDF all corporates should have this application in the reader installed.

I agree with Lev keep it to no more than 2 pages ( Kodak HR Director told me this once ONLY exception I know of for long resumes are if your a medic or researcher as you have to list published papers and research projects ), clear concise bullet points on the past work history you have, as mimsy said an introduction and any major benefits you have brought to any company in the past thats in same work area.

BUT good luck in getting the job Fred G :)

Thanks a LOT for the tips and well wishes. I will redo my résumé this weekend and send it Sunday or Monday as a PDF file, with a brief email message, a short cover letter, then the résumé.

Hopefully I will be posting good news latter next week...:-D Thanks again, believe it or not, I have never E-Mailed a résumé before.

Thanks again for the quick, and helpfull tips!

Have someone else proof it, or better yet have a couple of people proof it. It's hard for some to spot their own errors right after doing a doc. Good luck
