This older dude had an old EMachine 366mhz running W98 and AOL4.0. He bought a used PC running Win2000 SP4. I installed AOL 9.0 and set it up with his same user name and password. However, I was mistaken in thinking that his email address book and old emails were stored online with AOL. When I logged in to his AOL account, all that was there was the new emails; empty address book, empty 'old emails' section. So, I'm assuming these things are stored somewhere on the old EMachine. I have both PCs and they're both functional; the EMachine has some really deep installer problems and corrupt system cabinet files, but it does boot to a desktop and most things function; the Win2000 PC runs perfectly. I was hoping I could simply slave the EMachine drive to the Win2000 PC and just copy the needed files over.... can anyone offer some help on where the AOL address book and old emails are stored??? :confused

    THANKS!

You'll be lucky to find stored emails. AOL even deletes incoming emails if they are not read in a short time. At least my version of AOL did. I switched to www.gmx.com as they consolidate all your various email addresses into one place and leave unread emails in place. Bazza

Make sure AOL is not currently running. .abi and .PFC seem to be the common ext.

    location is normally "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\C_America Online 9.0\organize".

Seems like just back up on old pc and restore the file on the new pc, overwrites the file though. You can look and see if he backed the mail up or call him.

I've been doing some research myself, and it appears that all versions of AOL from 6.0 and up save the address book and everything else online. He was running 4.0 so it should be on the PC somewhere... right? WRONG!!! I started searching through the Win98 hard drive and it appears that AOL has been either uninstalled or the program files folder for AOL was removed :cry I'm running a quick data recovery app right now just to see if maybe it's worth messing with. There are some AOL folders on the desktop ("AOL downloads" which is a shortcut that's empty, and "AOL Saved Files" which just has some pictures and misc crap) but that's it. I suppose I'll see what the data recovery pulls up.
Thanks, but this is W98se so the file structure is completely different :( I'm still working on it though so if anyone has any bright ideas for AOL4.0 and W98se, PLEASE POST!!! Thanks for the tips so far, I'll try to apply them the best I can ;)

I have found out that what I'm looking for is a folder called "organize" (or a file called organize ???). Anyway- the AOL program folder has been removed, and pretty thoroughly it looks like :( Hopefully I can resurrect it..... thanks for all the tips guys, believe it or not, it has helped (moral support if nothing else ;) )

I think there was (and possibly still is) a problem with the AOL address book. I had trouble with it, both when using the AOL software, and also when not using it (just logging into the AOL site to read and send emails).
The email addresses are supposed to be stored online, and sometimes they are there, sometimes not.
I sent an email to AOL about this last year, and their advice made no sense to me at all.
