Vista doesn't like CDs

Since I installed Vista, my computer reads written CD-Rs as blank disks. They worked in XP Pro just fine. However, any DVD I put in reads perfectly. I've updated my CD/DVD drive firmware (drive is a Matshita UJ-850B, updated firmware from 1.0 to 1.1), with absolutely no effect. Is there some kind of tweak to fix this, or any kind of solution??

Oh come on, there has to be something. I really need to get the data off of some CD-Rs. :(

Thanks. I already saw that. The problem is, this is a laptop, and the drive isn't removable. Besides, I had absolutely no issues when using Windows XP Pro, and the drive is in Explorer, and reads all DVDs (DVD-R, DVD+R, etc.), just not CD-R's.

I have a similar problem, on my Vista machine it does not like writing text or music to DVD in place of CD but my XP machine will do it without a hitch

What is the file format of the CD-Rs?

One is a complete closed (finalized) CD-R that I burned myself, and it contains a ZIP or RAR file, I believe RAR... fairly large, like 300MB? It's a backup of Civilization III, the game.

The other CD-R only contains about 6MB of small file size JPEG files in one folder. I can't be sure if it was finalized or not, as I didn't burn it.

I haven't tried other CD-Rs, but I know it's a Vista issue, since the game backup CD read just fine several times in XP Pro (I created it with Nero 6 in XP Pro on a desktop PC, but used it in my laptop), and the CD-R containing pictures read just fine in a Dell laptop at work (running XP Pro). Fortunately, I was able to transfer the pictures to a thumbdrive using the work laptop, but that doesn't solve the issue, unfortunately.

I've tried updating the driver, but Vista said it had the best driver, and even listed the device driver as "CD Drive", which is even more puzzling to me. I don't think the driver is corrupted, since this is a fairly new hard drive (less than 6 months old, and it's running like a champ), and I installed Vista less than a month ago.

The even more frustrating thing is, Sony claims my laptop is Vista compatible (check the support page, and it has downloads for MCE or Vista even... http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFE670G ).

So yeah, I'm stumped. I do have more than one burning program installed, if that matters? Nero 8, ImgBurn, DVDFlick, and I also have Daemon Tools Lite installed.

Not really what I meant ;)

If you right click the CD and choose properties, it should give you filesystem information.

    Oh, my bad.

Vista says they're blank CDs... it pops up with the blank CD autoplay popup options. "File system" is blank in properties. I'm attaching a screenshot of the Properties dialog box.

So basically, Vista sees the CD... it just doesn't see ANYTHING on the CD.:confused

The free functionality IsoBuster (I'm not buying it, because I wouldn't use it) reads the picture CD as blank as well.

For some strange reason, after I installed IsoBuster, Vista reads the game backup CD now... strange.
