Aussie Sports Minister has a bet with UK Sports Minister that OZ will finish ahead of the UK in the medal tally. Aussies rule, so far. :-D Bazza

    Rikky and wildwolf220, :-D :-D

If Michael Phelps was a country, he'd rate 8th in the 2008 tally.
Our supergirl, Stephanie Rice (without Michael), would rate 9th with 3/3 golds.

Queensland (my state) without the above, would rate 8th.

These 3 put a lot of countries to shame. :major :cool Bazza

China will win in medal stakes as they bred/created medal winners, nature of its communist regime, only have to look at the forced labour citizens that are filling out the crowd, yay go yellow T-Shirts!

So speaks volumes as to its training of athletes for each sport!

Wow, we just got 3 medals today, 2 in women's wrestling and one in mens pairs rowing. Finally! I wonder if someone will best our Donovan Bailey's world record in the 100m dash that has stood since 1996. He seems to think that it will be broken by this field of sprinters.

  13. wildwolf220

WOW, Usain Bolt ran 9.69 in the final.
New world record & he was slowing down with 10m to go.

GB are #3 with 11 gold. OZ are #5 with 8. Michael with 8 is still ahead of Russia. :-D

Congrats Michael. I doubt if his record will be equalled (or beaten).

I thought GB used to compete as separate nations. England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales or is this in the Commonwealth games only? :confused

Damn, GB ahead with 12, Aussies 11. :( We haven't done so well in sports that we previously won a lot of medals in. Track cycling for instance. Mens swimming was a shutout for Gold. :cry

GB 16, OZ 11. I think we're gonna be beaten by the Poms. :cry :( A day of mourning will soon be declared in OZ).
Just heard that GB spent over $40,000,000 (or was that GBP?) on cycling alone. This will hopefully stir up our politicians and the Australian Institute of Sport to spend lots more AUD$ so we can give the World a run for their money in London in 2012.

We wont catch GB now. :cry Still we won medals in 18 different sports. GB won most of theirs in 2 sports. Wait till 2012. I wonder how home ground advantage will help them in 2012.

We'll probably end up in 5th-6th position as predicted at the start of the 2008 games, but that doesn't help much when the Brits are 3rd. :(

Well at least we won 1 (probably) final medal, in Pole Vaulting (first time ever). :cool

It was terrific to watch but well after midnight AEST when it finished.
I was hoping he'd go for a 6 metre attempt (around 20 foot) but he sttled on Gold with Olympic record.

Considering the fact that the Netherlands has about 16 million inhabitants, they're doing quite well with a total of 16 medals. That's one medal per million. ;) Therefore, I see that some big countries have some "catching up" to do. *cough* ;)

roflmao I always thought that Aussies lived on a continent rather than in a country. So no dice for the Aussies on this one. ;)

PS: I wasn't particularly referring to Aussies when I wrote my previous post, you're doing marvelous!! :wave

Really cannot believe our local idiot Gordon Brown is concidering giving most of the UK Olympic team gongs!!! ( gongs for the non-UKs are medals or titles like Sir, Dame, CBE, OBE and MBE ) These things are handed out like sweets to sports people and music/movie stars who really do bugger all in most cases to promote their chosen field ( Sir Steve redgrave is one exception as he competed in multiple Olympic games winning gold at least IIRC 6 times, thats what needs recognising and not a one off! ), these gongs should be going to school teachers, crossing attendents, doctors, community leaders and scientists etc who actually do some good in the community!

Just annoys the hell out of me when more deserving "ordinary" folk do more for the UK.. /Rant off

Its great that the UK team won so many medals and I'm proud of the team for doing so well this time, but can we keep it up for 2012?

    Agreed was superb
I also loved the Womens Hockey matches, wow that was close fought contest.

I see where you are coming from David, the Knighthoods go to the people who make most money and civil servants who have just put in the years but not really achieved much and of course don't forget the awards to ex prime ministers.

those who give their whole life to the betterment of others very rarely get any recognition.

What a surprise. An Aussie won the 10 metre High Diving. China had won 7/7 at the Diving and expected to win the 8th. An unexpected medal to us. :major Bazza

Apart from the rent a crowd ( those in yellow Ts ) and the fake opening fireworks, its been a good Olympics and just hope China learn from this and become a more open and global country.

Now bring on London 2012, lets hope we do this well and dont mirror our 2000 celebrations fiasco, the Dome would make a great velodrome BTW!
