    Hi all
from what I have read despite my "mature" age (44) I seem to be a novice when dealing with pc probs. My only excuse is that I have to pick up the pieces when someone else (usually the same one...) has defied my guidelines which I usually quote to my younger users.I am currently trying to deal with a trojan called Virtumonde (aka Mundo?) which has emerged very soon after my wife's 16 yr old son hit the BitTorrent sites without my permission/knowledge. My PC is fairly protected (AVG Free) with Windows firewall on always.
My question is, apart from getting rid of the pest (no not the lad!!, the virus) is do the kidz have to disable any security items for Bittorrent to work, I never use anything like that eg Limewire but I seem to remember he brought in a little beastie via Limewire last time. I have tried many tools like stinger , Hijack this etc but admittedly am scared to go online again with my PC (This is my holidaying Father in Law's Laptop) until I know it is sorted.
I am currently slowly backing up my stuff in readiness for the inevitable reload...
Thanks to all in anticipation (time for another Stella)belch

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

No security applications do not have to be disabled to run those programs be do realize that using them can be dangerous due to where things are downloaded from and what is being downloaded.

To fix your malware problems, continue on with the below.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
