acer is the brand, I still need a model to know exactly what laptop you own. XP is it SP2 or 3? When did the problem start?

Fn + F7 turns the touchpad off and on.
When the computer boots up, see if the touchpad is working, if not, press Fn +F7 and try again.
Also look in device manager to see that the touchpad driver is loaded. You should see no yellow !s nor red Xs anywhere. if you see any, post what is listed behind the yellow !s and/or red Xs.

Most laptops get hot - a lot squeezed in to a little space. So i wouldn't say that is a major concern. If it gets too hot, it will shut off to save the CPU.

Well it appears that your touchpad has died. You could take the laptop apart and see if a cable is loose (this isn't something I'd want to do) or just resign yourself to the fact that you have to use a mouse.

I use a tiny portable mouse about 3 1/2" long (the USB connector fits inside the mouse so it is easy to travel with).

hi, i just wanted to add, even though i know this post is old, for anyone else with this issue, i have just repaired an acer aspire 5050 laptop and had the same touch pad issues, it was fine in safe mode but when booted normally into windows xp sp2, no mouse, the problem was the battery ! as soon as i removed the battery the touchpad works fine ! strange but true, thanks
