My friend at work inherited a Presario 700 laptop from his girlfriend. Seems GF borked XP and could not get it repaired..... another lackey in the office as well could not get it setup. So, they knew I could do something with it.

I had inherited a HD from another DOA machine and knew it had Kubuntu running on it. I have not used it in over a year now. Badda boom and NOTHING. Google shows the battery is problematic so I un hook battery, hold power and with AC away we go. So I gave up and swapped the HD. They are equal down to the part number.

I am updating to Ubuntu 8.04 right now.

    Life is good. :cool

I have tried for many days to configure the XP side. I am at over 200 updates and it will not digest SP3 without doing the upgrades.....

wonder why I prefer sudo apt-get upgrade ?

I worked on my sister-in-laws 533 MHZ dinosaur and brought 512 of RAM that it will not take. So I installed-

1- a dime beside the CD so she can say she threw something of value away.

2- Firefox so she can struggle with AOL, MSN and whatelse on it.

Today I took Aurora (lappy) to the desk to do updates to be closer to the junk router. I look why the dino is struggling with something. IE was stalled in one window, and half stalled in two others. <bang head smiley>

A comment about Microsloth and updating:

I loathe Windoz now. Didn't used to.

Hubby got a new machine... he installed XP.

It was left to me to update everything... 10 hours later, I was done. **Says a few choice words about SP3, then takes a calming Zen moment** He still doesn't have SP3 on his machine and if he wants it on there he will do it himself.
(It prevented ANY and ALL other updates, so I nuked it... everything went just fine after that.)

    Now, a thread reply:

To geeks, I am a newbie. To non-geeks, I am a geek. In my own estimation, I am a perpetual newbie, who often wishes she were a geek. (Might cut down on the amount of time I spend in forums, scratching my head and looking bewildered.)

lol Thanks Augie, but I meant it... I am not going to put it on his machine.

That machine does not connect to the internet anyway and all he does with it is play games and listen to music... so he's happy with it as is.

uh.. also... it wasn't 10 hours just on updating Winduhz. Only about half that time was for the OS, the rest was for the programs he wanted.

(Have I mentioned lately how much I love Linux? **Click, update, click, done**)

I call myself a linux geek, but I'm not so sure I should. I've only been using Ubuntu since the beginning of April and I've figured out basic stuff, but I sure don't know how to write command lines except for copy and paste.

But I do know more than the average person. I don't know why more people don't use linux. I love it! Sure sometimes it's a big pain but once you know how to do something, it isn't a problem anymore.

I restored the lappy with sp3 and it took a LONG time to install the over 100 updates..... I still don't have SP3 running on it.

I was vacationing with my sister-in-law and hooked up a 12 GIG drive with Ubuntu installed. It did not work well, but sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop and alt-ctrl-backspace and I was in XFCE running quite happy on the 512 Meg beast.

This is why we have forums and Google! ;)

If you press up arrow in Terminal you can see commands you have already entered also :cool
