N5638J, that's fantastic. One really has to go cold turkey for this stuff. If patches etc worked - those companies would be Trillionares. I agree it's really a force of habit, something I hope to kick as well. Cheers..

so it's been what. a week? I want a progress report in 1 month, dammit. Lots of people quit for two weeks and relapse, so you know, and you'll need alot of will power to keep going and STAY smoke free. Keep us posted!

They are! And not necessarily because they work...good effective, gullible marketing is key to success here.

NJ....you can do this......you have a goal and determination to be successful, so even on those hard days hold on to those thoughts. You can are going to feel a whole heap better, food is going to taste really great again, and the sense of achievement is awesome :)

5 and a half years for me now. 2 and a half for my husband :)

Quitting cold turkey with the help of a lady friend of course ;) Its not really been hard its just the habit of having one. The only difference i noticed with food is the Sweet tea i been drinking tastes sour.

Thanks on the Congrats and i know its a powerful drug but its not as bad as some people let on.
Yes Nada i will keep you updated. I did not know you cared so much hmmm wanna roommate? :p
Yea it will be in the long run that i will feel any different i think.
Yep Cold Turkey its the only way to do it. i read somewhere the first 3days are the hardest but drink plenty of juices to flush your system and you should be fine

    You smoked???? :mad

I did not know that. Hooray for your lady. :) Did you not read where not long ago I had part of my lungs removed? Ah, but so much better now. Suffered for around 10 years not able to breath, walk do anything.
Not everyone is eligible for the surgery, must had an angel looking over me, as you do now.
I smoked for 40 years, never thought I could quit. It has been almost 9 years now, cold turkey was the way I did it.
Take it one day at a time. Best wishes to you :wave

Congrats to all who have given up smoking. :major It doesn't matter if you only have a few days up, or a week, or 2 weeks, or years. You will feel better and smell better (to yourself and other people).

I am very thankful that I never did like it, and never took it up. Bazza

Welcome to my world. Tried it all, drugs, hypnotism and in the end it was inspiration. I promised my stepson and I do not lie and I do not show weakness when not appropriate. Hence, a few months back I quit after almost 25 years of smoking. Im still struggling, but will NOT fail. Point is, you need to not just want to quit, as so many tell you, but have a true purpose and reason that makes it not easy, but possible. Worked for me.

Kids will do it every time. Seeing mine cry as they begged me to give up worked.

They used to have a government health advertisement in England to help you think about giving up and it went along the lines of....

"So you think giving up smoking is hard? Try telling your children you have lung cancer..."

    Hello NJ

Congratulations on your double good fortune, that of giving up smoking and finding someone nice to inspire you to give up for good. Persistence and determination are key. Very happy for you, and best wishes.

Stop, no quit. Do, no try. I am not a smoker, I am not a smoker, I am not a smoker.... Stopped for two years once, felt I could do anything after that, and did. Unfortunately one cigar was all it took, and I am back in the habit. A good support system really helped, addictive behavior is a PITA.

I disagree, I heard all the advice, tried everything, smoked from 16-43. Drink, smokers sit next to me, hell had a cigar a few days ago, no problem. Your told that you have to "want it". Your told to tell yourself your a non smoker, its mostly all bs. Most people who are fed this do not succeed. You need to wake up one day and a light bulb needs to go off. Thats what did it for me.

A book I read called Easyway helped me a lot with the lies and misconceptions about quitting smoking. http://allencarr.com/central/

Did you quit by yourself? Or did you use a med like Chantix. My dad used Chantix because his doctor said he was getting emphyseima.

Good for you Fred! I finally quit again a couple of weeks ago after reaching a plateau of 5 cigs/day and staying there for a couple of months. I finally got so mad at the 5/day, which was really torture not to smoke more, that I just went ahead and quit for good. Stick with it man!:cool

    Hey, N5638J!
I'm a transplanted Canadian living in Douglas County, GA for the last 4 years. (LOVE it here!!) I quit 20 years ago myself, and thank God now that I have children I won't have to tell them I have lung cancer. (Cried when I read that.)

Hang in there - FORCE yourself not to give in to cravings. Eating chips helped me. Of course, I haven't been able to shake the chip addiction.....

Thats about over 100miles away from me lol

I am doing it cold turkey and like i said i never really had cravens it was just a habit. And theres no other Habit like it and people that never smoked just don't know how it really is.;)

I could of told you it would drive you nuts by doing that. i did some research and cold turkey is the best if you try to cut back everytime you smoke one it puts you back at the start again and you end up going nuts. while i was reading up on it i seen it said the best form of torture is to make a smoker cut back and keep him smoking like one every 3 days and they will go crazy. because on the 3rd day the body is just about flushed out and having that one smoke would put them right back where they started.

Great stuff N5638J!! I tried to quit last year and did it for 3 months. Used the patch and have an allergy to it so had to discontinue it.

@everyone: Please do NOT use Chantix to stop smoking: See the side-effects here, especially look at the 2nd page.: http://www.chantix.com/content/side...side+effects&HBX_OU=50&o=23119569|166373525|0

My doc wanted to prescribe Champix (Chantix) and after I looked up the massive amount of negative info on it on Google I refused it.

Yes, I heard about that Chantix, my doctor few years back wanted to give me something that (might) cause seizures. Think it's off the market now.
Most if that stuff is the Pharmicutials Companies using people as tests.
A drug can beused for up to nine months before the FDA decides if it's safe. That is usually the samples your doctor gives you for free at your appointment.
    Sound familure?
First ones are free rolleyes hum kinda like street drug pushers huh?

We're actually the guinea pigs out here, because most clinical trials, done by pharma only, last only for about 3-4 months. Additionally, they pick the "right" candidates for these trials, not like us the common folk out here. :( So it wouldn't be surprising to me if the pharma results could be somewhat favorable regarding any drug they put on the market. Long term use is unknown until the facts roll in and then they're often regarded as anecdotal.
The FDA refused to accept the drug name as Champix because of it's name and so the Chantix name was "born". Not so here in Canada where the name Champix is used.

Kudo's to all who were/are able to quit smoking! :)
