and locked myself out of windows.

    I stupidly removed a domain w/o creating a user/password.

now it takes me to a log in page and NOTHING lets me in.

I no longer have a recovery disc (bought system used) - I tried starting safe mode (won't go there) - I tried downloading a boot up thing from linus using an iso image (I think that was over my head) and it says when I use f12 that it is not available.

    Help?

When you get to the log in screen ....do you have a drop down list ....or do you just have a choice for the "local machine" and not the domain anymore?

I did before I removed the domain .. now I have nothing but a space for user name and password

What was the original set up? Is / was it part of a business domain .....do you recall anything about the user accounts and the "local machine" properties?

    What have you tried?

    What happens with safe mode?

I knew the previous password - and used it .. it says it's wrong (yes it was a business domain)

when I hit f8 to go to safe mode NOTHING happens . it acts like I never touched it.

I only used the one choice to sign in before

What make and model is the computer....as some do not use F8 but instead may use F2 ....and you should start looking around for an exact xp cd of your version to borrow just in case we need it.

Dell is all I know ... it shows f2 as set up, f12 as boot on the bios page .. but nothing else.

something tells me I'm gonna have to buy a new OS.

If you have your xp product key on the computer, then you can borrow a disc, if not.......:cry

Sweet.......then start calling your friends for a disc........either home or pro depending on what was installed (and let's not hope we run into a Dell OEM version) ....

IF you have a USB keyboard that might be why you can't get into F8 safe mode. A ps2 keyboard might be recognized.

That was it. Didn't fix my issue unfortunately but at least I know I am not incapable of tapping f8 at the right time.:-D

So you can get into safe mode? You should be able to reset passwords and rejoin the domain .....

I downloaded a password reset/boot system program, burned it to a cd (that gave me the biggest issues) and loaded it into my system using f12 to get it to boot from the cd.

is it ok to post links like that?
