    Hello,

Found this forum and can't believe all of the great help that is here. My PC got infected
with a virus. I decided not to attempt a cleanup and just rebuild a new PC.
    Here are my questions:
    1. I have a backup of most of my files from late july so I can use those. Only exception
are files that I have modified since and my email. My last email backup was January.
Am I safe to burn a few files (database for a program) to CD and put on my new
    computer?
    2. What about email? Am I safe to burn the folders to CD for install on another system?

Shame on me really... I opened an email attachment from someone that I thought I knew.
I scanned the attachment 3 times with Norton before opening and it said it was ok.

I unplugged the network cable to the PC and have left it. I have run some of the
spyware tools which removed lots of problems. The remaining viruses require
my original XP disk (to restore files) which I no longer have.

Are viruses know to be transfered via burning to CD?

Thanks for all you guys do.

    Mike

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

We cannot guarantee that you are safe since anything could potentionally carry and infection. In most cases, you are probably okay.

If you are copying emails that contain infections then you will be transferring this infected database to another PC. Just copying the file does not mean that you will cause the PC to get infected. If you open the email and its attachments you would get infected.

If you copy infected files to any type of media then you are copying the infection. It is what type of file and what you do what the infected files afterwards that matters.
