    Hello All.

I'm trying to help my parents out with their computer that is running very slow.

They are running Microsoft Windows XP Professional, version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600.

I first followed the steps in "Basic computer maintenance everyone should do"
This did not resolve the problem.

I then started malware removal procedures.

I started at Step 1: House Cleaning & Setup

    Uninstalling malware programs - COMPLETED
    Updating Sun Jave - Completed
Use MSconfig to setup for Normal Startup Mode - Could Not Comlete

I followed the steps by Clicking Start>Run> and typed msconfig and then clicked OK. I then recieved the following...

"Windows cannot find 'msconfig'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

I will wait until I get some direction on how I can complete this step or whether or not I should just continue.

    Thanking you all in advance,
    Global2004

Just continue with the procedures and attach the requested logs when you are ready.

    Thank you TimW for responding.

I continued on with the rest of the steps as was indicated.

In Step 2: Search & Destroy 1 Problem Found DssAgent Fixed

In the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Scan, No Malicious Items Detected.

During the MGTools Scan I recieved this Pop up window ProcessDll.exe Application Error. I followed the directions given in the forum.

The computer still remains slow. It takes over a minute to open IE and load the information.

    I will post the logs.

    Thanks, Global 2004

This is not a malware issue. Your logs are clean. Considering what little you have running and the relatively small amount of programs installed, I would suggest you post in the software forum.

Now we need to clean up from the scans:

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you get a success message, then it is time to do our final steps:

This is true the biggest problem is that you are running Windows XP on a 700 Mhz PC with only 192 MB of RAM and only 32.7 MB is free. Your processor is just too slow and you only have about 18% of the minimum amount of RAM I would recommend for using XP. I recommend at least 1 GB of RAM. But even if you could put that much RAM in the older PC, it would be better but would still be slow because of the processor speed.

Thank you for all your help MG.

Chaslang, Would you have any other suggestions? Could I go to an earlier version of Window to help the issue? If so, how would I do that?

Thank you again for all your help and what you guys do. It is really appreciated.

Yes you could if you have a copy of Windows 2000. I would not go any further back than that. But even Win 2K will run slow with only 192MB of RAM after you get all of your software reinstalled. You need to consider maxing out your RAM first. And if it looks like it will be expensive to do that, you should compare to the price of a new cheap PC. This is a topic you would be better or discussing in the Software Forum or maybe even the Hardware Forum.

For immediate change with your current setup, you could uninstall AVG8, reboot and install Avira Antivirus instead of AVG8 which will help reduce the load on your processor and RAM.

You could also stop the below from loading at startup which will also help:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SmartDefrag] "C:\Program Files\IObit\IObit SmartDefrag\IObit SmartDefrag.exe" /StartUp
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
