Well, I bought one. Should have it early next week. I might be moving soon, and it could come in handy for that.

Any of you folks big on the GPS units? It was $99 plus 7$ shipping when I got it a little while ago. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...WEM1708AM&cm_mmc=Email-_-Main-_-WEM1708-_-GPS

Seems like a pretty decent deal. We shall see. I can hook it up to my laptop and 'wardrive' now!:-D Not too likely.

    Nice savings Fred_G!!!! Sweet :)

Are you moving to such a remote location you need a GPS to find it then? ;)

I have a hand held Garmin eTrex Vista HCx and use it for hunting and geocaching, and love it! Just recently bought a topographical micro-card for it for this year's hunting to attempt to alleviate the problem of running up on cliffsa nd getting turned around.

    This is mine https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8703

This is the topo detail http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/topo/topous24kcard.jsp#data cards

And this is geocaching if you fancy a new hobby ;) Great fun! http://www.geocaching.com/ I brought a travel bug all the way from the UK to the US, much to it's owner's surprise :-D

Lev, I have been trying to get a job way up in PA! Ahh... I know that is way up north!

Looked like I had the job for sure, need a cell phone and a new truck in the near future, GPS recommended, then I don't know. Have not heard from my friend. But I can use a GPS every once in a while even if I don't get the job.

The companies home base is in Houston, so it may take some time. Dang Ike! I really want this job though! Think good thoughts for Fred_G! :-D

Awesome, E. I love the portable ones. We have one installed in one of our cars and then one handheld. The handheld is just as good, a LOT less expensive, and, well, portable. It's come in handy a bunch for us.

Good luck with your job WAY up here in PA. ;) :)

Got my toy in today! Dang, for $99 this thing is sweet! Touch screen directions, can even plug in an SD drive into it. Fred_G approves of this device! :-D

I love the smell of new electronic toys in the evening...

I should see if there is some firmware for ours. Thing takes Forever to boot up.

hehe...Know what's really fun? Don't listen to it when it tells you to turn and then it tells you it has to reconfigure the route. You can almost hear it getting pissed off at you.

Omg..I so need to find some excitement in my life!-D

I had a Shogun with a built in SatNav in the UK. Use to crack me up when it totally despaired of my following its navigation skills and would say "If at all possible, do a U-turn" LOL

  13. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

A talking shotgun... Ohh now I could have fun with that if I could change what the gun said!

SHOGUN Fred, not shotgun LOL. It's a European Mitsubishi suburban type vehicle. Though there were times on the freeway it would have been handy to have a couple of 30-06's hooked up to the hood ;)

I don't want to drive the car, I want a talking GPS shotgun!:-D You know Lev, we could invent that and make a lot of $!

You invent it - I'll be happy to test-drive it and market it over here ;)

i'm a big tomtom guy. i own a 720, and have used a 330S. they're extremely easy to use, the routing is accurate, and have been great in getting around the northern va/dc area. the 130S and 330S units are pretty affordable these days - great devices if you're just getting into the GPS game.

OK.....a long weekend hunting and the only thing I discovered (actually, I did see my first cougar which was pretty cool) is the new GPS system I want. It is combined with a radio system and anyone else who has them you can locate them on the GPS system, so not only can you communicate with them, you can also walk right to them. Perfect for Oregon hunting! I WANT ONE :-D

Got a link to that Lev? I don't need one, but it sounds nice! And a freaking real live cougar!?

The jaguar at my local zoo stalked me when I was taking picts of the albino tiger. Neat to watch, but very creepy as well. :yum

  23. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

    Sure - here's the link http://www.thegpsstore.com/Garmin-Rino-520HCx-GPS-FRS-Radio-P1579C9.aspx

The cougar was awesome. He didn't see me at first (cause I was hiding ;)) but then he slinked off pretty sharpish when I walked toward him. He was about 100yds from me in a relatively open ridge top. I always thought they would be much larger than that....kinda tiger size.

  24. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Tiger size is small? I am staying the heck out of your neck of the woods!:eek

Dang, Lev, that combo radio and GPS is sweet! If I still hunted, especially with my friends, I would so have to get that. Instead, I got a new laptop and a set of kitchen knives.:-D

  25. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Laptop and set of kitchen knives is just another version of radio/gps and a 30-06 :-D

I meant I previously thought a cougar was the size of a tiger, but actually they are quite a bit smaller ;)

GPS, hunting, yep, grocery store is 1/4 of a mile from my house. My success rate 'hunting' there has been very good. :-D

  27. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Hopefully you don't need the gps to get there, and you don't take the kitchen knives with you :eek

  28. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Silly Lev, they take cash there. Knives and stores generally do not mix well. Unless maybe you are at a knife store...:-D

Just as an FYI, eCost.com is selling recert/refurb Navigon 2100 auto GPS for $79 right now. Several people at work have them and like them. One big plus, it actually says street names instead of just "turn right".

Price dropped to $74 today, I finally couldn't resist.

So Fred - I think I convinced hubby not only does he need a GPS, but he needs GPS/radio sets for us both so we can see each other's location.

There's nothing like losing your husband in the forest hunting and when he says "where are you?" you reply "by the big tree" to get him to agree to your next geek gadget :-D Works everytime ;)

*Runs off to google best deal*

  33. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

I won't even ask where you are going to mount that GPS on your husband! :-D

List the requirements of the GPS you need from the device and I will ask the 'deal master' at another forum I go to to check prices for you.

This dude can find the cyber deals. He is known as the Deal Master...:-D

  34. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Hehe...well, been researching and the more I look at the one I linked before, the more I love it http://www.thegpsstore.com/Garmin-Rino-520HCx-GPS-FRS-Radio-P1579C9.aspx

I want it to be a Garmin as I already have the topo cards, so an SD card slot needed. Needs to be color, can GPS and send location to friend; also needs to be a radio, have at LEAST 6 mile range between users, long-life batteries, waterproof, drop proof (hehe), WAAS, be able to track, have waypoints, have compass, performa in canyons (when other users might be on ridges), proximity alarms.

Thanks Fred - appreciate you looking in to this for me :) I need 2 of them, so if there is a two-pack deal even better. Usually works better than buying them seperately, but as this is new to Garmin they may not been on that page (or map) yet ;)

They are totally different. In-car systems (yes I know they say "portable" but anything can be if you wish to carry it far enough) and they aren't a GPS/radio system.

These are where the Palm Tungsten and other PDAs used to be displayed. 4 x 6 inches is not portable?
