After accepting thel icense and install path, the installation terminates with:

AppName: hijackthis.exe AppVer: 2.0.0.2 ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0b62ecbf

I have removed all directories and registry keys refering to HiJackThis. A full Trendmicro Internet Security 2008 scan comes up clean.

The same exe file runs on another XP pro machine.

    Have I lost a dll ???

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Does other software still install without a problem? It possible that your problem has nothing to do with malware but we need to determine that. Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    1. Can install other software without problems.
    2. Scanned system with the following, and only some tracking cookies were detected:
Trendmicro Internet Security 2008 (installed and up to date)
    CCleaner
    drweb-cureit
    mbam
    RootkitBuster
    RUBotted
    SUPERAntiSpyware
    MS Windows Defender

    3. Java up to date
    4. XP Up to date.

Does HiJackThis require a runtime, or other library that may have been deleted by malware in the past?

Not that I know of. Does it run in safe boot mode?

    No.
I receive the same error in Safe Mode.
Downloaded a new copy from trend micro; same error on attempt to run stand alone version. Install version (.msi) does the same thine.

Please run the procedure given in message # 2 so we can determine if any malware is causing problmes.

Those procedures have been run twice. We're recovering from a week long power failure. This weekend Ill down load new copies of the scanners and try it a third time.

You did not need to run them twice. You just needed to do what was requested and that is run them and then attach the requested logs for us to check out. If you are posting here for help and the logs are not attached, we consider the instructions not being completed since they ask you to attach the logs if still having problems.

Note that MGTools failed to install HiJackThs. The failure was the same as when manually attempting to install HiJackThis.

I'm not sure why HijackThis is failing with this particular error however it really does not matter too much at this point since you do not have any malware anyway and don't need HijackThis for anything. If you are really hard pressed and with to see similar info that HijackThis would give, you can install and run the below:

    a-squared HiJackFree

Now we need to cleanup some items from running ComboFix.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significan amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Received a success message about adding the registry keys.
Thank you for checking the logs.

I'm still mconcerned about not being able to install HijackThis on one machine. Not only would I like to have a baseline log for each of my macjines, but after 35 years of writing software I feel there is probably a landmine waiting for me.

    Thanks for the help.

    You're welcome.

It does not appear to be anything related to malware. But I'm not sure exactly what it is. Errors like this occur with many different software applications. It is most likely an issue within the OS. You could try doing the below to see if it helps.

Click Start, Run, and enter sfc /scannow and click OK. There is a space after the sfc. This runs System Rile Checker which looks for missing or corrupted system files and attempts to replace/repair them from files on your hard disk or from the CD if necessary. So it will ask for the Windows CD if it needs it.

Also as I stated previously, you could try using a-squared's HijackFree which does give a very close duplicate log of HijackThis.

I have HiJackFree, thanks for the link.
    sfc/scannow found nothing.
