Hello, this is my first post here, so sorry for not introducing myself first, but I was wondering if i could still get some help with my problem. I'm currently a college student that majors in architecture so my computer is pretty decently heavily used, at times ill be running photoshop, illustrator, autocad, and other programs all at once. Lately though I've noticed that every now and then my screen will just shut off for maybe 2 seconds then turn back on, it seems to be getting more frequent, maybe 3 times or so a week. It's probably a hardware problem but I'm not an expert. I use a Dell Latitude D820 its about 2.5 years old. Any idea's for solutions or what is wrong with the comp would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced.

The best way to troubleshoot, but might not be possible at college, would be to attach an external monitor and run both displays. If just the laptop screen blacks out, it could be the inverter going. If both screens turn black, it could be the video chip. The inverter can be repaired but if it is the video chip, there is only a wee bit of hope. A few laptops have replaceable video cards. I don't know if yours does. In fact, it was only recently that I learned that a small number of laptops had replaceable video cards. I thought no laptop video card/chip could be replaced.

Plodr is right. That is one way to check, but another possibility is the wiring around the frame of the LCD on your laptop. I had the same problem on my laptop, and had to move the screen around a bit until it stopped. When you close your laptop or put it away and close the screen down, try to close it softly so that it doesn't damage or loosen the wires in the screen frame.

Other than that, the way I fixed it was opening it up and re-soldering the wires back (although this is what a technician did for me).

I hope this helps, but Plodr has a really good suggestion and I think you should go with that first.

Hello fonz, welcome to Major Geeks.

There's lots of possibilities, both hardware and software so you need to gather more information.

You say you drive the beast pretty hard - do you have many windows open at once and have you ever had the message,

'Your system is low on virtual memory....' ?

What are the circumstance when the problem occurs
A particular program or group of programs
    Random
After how long from startup - is the pc hot? check
    Download SIV from MG

Of course it could be dicky wiring or a component beginning to fail.

Laptop wiring is not soldered, but an internal plug could be loose - this is very common.

    Post more details.
