If I don't tell everyone I know about this I won't stick to it so here I go.

I am setting a goal for myself. I want to lose 40lbs by the end of the year. I'm going to accomplish this by first reducing my portions and slowly changing my diet. I don't want to rush into major eating changes right away because I might become discouraged. I'm also going to increase the amount of physical activity I partake in, as well as keep track of calories taken in and burned off. I found this great site, caloriecounter.com that has thousands of foods listed. You pick what you ate, assign it to a meal, and it easily keeps track of your food intake for the day. I'm going to use this great tool to help keep me going.

I've used this past week as a buffer week, preparing me for the transition, but starting tomorrow morning when I wake up, I'm going to get serious about this. Wish me luck!

Best of luck. Here's food chart sorted by Fat/protien/carb/cholesterol content etc. http://www.ntwrks.com/~mikev/
Physical activity plays a key role as you have mentioned. Just don't let your body/system get into, "starvation mode" by drastically restricting calories. I would actually suggest you to shed the weight slower than you have planned - Good luck once again & Cheers...

    Good luck OC.

A lot of loosing weight is mental, so make sure that whenever your worst eating times are, you've scheduled something else to do.

There are a couple of suggestions I would make. Before you eat, drink water. This will help "fill you up".
Also, eat slow. It takes time for your brain to tell your stomach it is full.

Good Luck! I do agree with Sikvik, loosing 40# in a little over 2 months is a bit extreme. I would think something like 2 to 3 pounds a month would be a better goal. And like Yargwel said, you might want to change that avatar to a salad! :-D

Good luck to you! You have set quite an ambitious goal for yourself IMO, it is doable by drastic means like the Atkins diet but no on can sustain that and it could be injurious to your health from ketosis. Also, don't look at the scales as the utmost standard as since you will be doing more activity which will put on muscle mass which is heavier than fat, measure yourself or just note how many notches you have to cinch your belt as your clothes get looser.

Overcooked I admire greatly your public declaration of wanting to loose 40lbs, so wish you every success in this endeavor and do let us know if we can help even in a small moral support way. Just do not try to loose too mach at once, take a year or two to loose this weight as crashing dieting never seems to work right and the body does not adjust well.

    So good luck to you.

    Thanks everyone!

I've tried diets in the past, and I've just rebounded from them. Ive done Atkins, south beach, and even Jenny Craig, but its such a change for me that once I stop, I regain my weight. This time around I plan on just watching what I eat and knowing how many calories I'm taking in. I'm not going to deprive myself of any foods I like. I just need to watch portion sizes and have the self control to know where to stop. My doctor says I can lose weight with exercise at about 2000 calories. And that it should be sufficient enough to make sure I get all the popper nutrition my body needs to function. I've always ate on the healthier side, making sure I always had my fruits, veggies, grains, protein etc. I just ate too much. I need to start adjusting my eating habits so I can continue maintaining my weight after I've lost it. I'm making a lifestyle change, and I need it to stick with me all my life.

thanks everyone! I'll keep you all updated probably once a week, or in the case that I need some motivation. :)

Do you know what OC, when I was in art colledge I pilled on the lbs! and then in my first job I did the same, ate and ate! but one year and as I was in the photo industry at the time I saw a picture of myself.. scary stuff!

So I decided to loose a few stone in weight, I didnt bother with these new fangled diets as trends change I just stuck to eating museli for breakfast and had soup and a roll for lunch and an evening normal meal, nothing fatty just fresh foods, meat, fish and poultry etc with veggies, no fries apart from once a month... if I felt peckish in the day I had Melba Toast with some low fat spread.

Ate no sweets/candy or biscuits, and did moderate excersise, did this for a year and lost 2 stone and have never put it back on, although lately have added a few lbs but not much, normal as I getting old-***!

I actually park 15mins walk away from work to still these days get some excersise walking from carpark to work and back, the too bit is up hill so is great start to day, so if you can walk then do so and if you can take stairs over lift then also do so.

Nah, all you need is some little old guy to chase you around on a lawn mower. And a montage.

    What? It worked for Rocky...

Good luck, I hope you over achieve.

Yup, surprising that relatively small changes like that really do work wonders without any hard effort.

@OC, good idea on not depriving oneself of what one likes in moderation! Stay away from the triple stacked beef/cheese/bacon burgers along with the sweet drinks. Those two along with fries blows your 2K/day objective in one meal!

Wishing you every success on the diet, O.C. Halo's right, changing lifestyle is the only permanent solution, which means eating less, and filling, but not fattening foods, and regular exercise, (1/2hr per day min). Trouble with diets is that most work when you're on the diet, but without the lifestyle changes, the same problems will return.

Even if you just lose half that amount in two months, you’ll bee doing fine, imo.:major

Thank you everyone for the support!

I can park in the back lot at school and that will force me to walk at least an additional fifteen minutes each way. That on top of exercise will really get me going.

I also mostly gave up pop a long time ago. The times that I do have it, its a diet coke so I don't have to worry about the calories there. I mostly drink water and iced tea with a squeeze of lemon.

Today went by without a hitch, though I didn't get a chance to do any regular exercise. I helped clean the house for a party so I was vacuuming, lifting things, carrying things and running up and down stairs all day. Much more activity than I usually get so at least I didn't fall completely behind there.

OC that is superb, as mentioned the little bits of excersise all add up, maybe get a pedometer and see if you can set a goal of steps take per day, suprising how just taking the stairs or that extra 15min walk adds up.

Iced tea and water, is great, love iced team but also try some of the herbal tea's, I'm a life long caffiene drinker and not your weak stuff, would happily drink expresso in a mug, but these days I tend to drink peppermint tea and cranberry and echinicia ( Fron this range at Twinings the fresh and fruity range is great and I drink these or one of them at least every day ) as both are good for digestion plus make a change from other drinks, they have NO calories in them so are great for a diversion to iced tea and water.

Good luck to you and you know we are here to give you moral support if needed.

I was about 25 lbs over weight. I started riding my bike to work every day for about 2 months. It was very hard in the beginning because it was 15 k one way. After a couple of week of ridding I was feeling much better & had a lot of more energy for other things. Then I started adding km’s to my route. Sometimes up to 25 k one way. I did cut down on my sweets & especially drinking pop. After I would get home I didn’t feel like pop or sweets, I would have unsweetened juice or water. The hardest thing is to stick to a schedule & don’t veer away from it for any reason. If you are tempted to flee from you schedule you are just a couple of click away from great caring people here that will do their best to get you back on track. All the best in your triumphant journey. :)

Ahhhhh well I have my vices! but all things are good in moderation, red wine is good for its clearing of free radicals and antioxidants.. well so medical folk say ;) rolleyes

So medical folk say? You just have to keep telling your self that then!

I believe the medical folk I work for completly, they are honest and buy the booze ;)

Medicine is full of guesses and opinions, whats good one day is bad the next, damm wish they would make their minds up, VASTLY OFF TOPIC ~ had a laugh with my boss this week after a conference we held, we where chatting and decided medicine and diagnosis is achieved through varying degrees of confusion!

But on topic, beers, spirits and wine have calorific values to them and not a great way to diet, although in moderation red wine has some value to calories and anti-oxidants etc but I would not suggest this as a dietary option.

Healthy various fresh food in moderation is best, dont rule out the occasional treat and CAKE but have these once a week, plus plenty of excersise, just dont make a diet unplesant have fun with it or you will crash diet and bounce back, a diet shoudl be fun and at the end give you your goal in weight loss.

Get these peanuts away from me! I had a bigger meal earlier and used up all my calories for the day. Worst part being there's a party at my house and there's food everywhere! I am currently starving so I grabbed some peanuts instead of Doritos. High in fiber but still pack a punch calorie wise. Good news though, I've lost six pounds since I started! Might be more fat loss, but I can feel some added muscle already. Especially in the arms. Night everyone!

Thanks! This is going by easier than any other of my previous attempts at dieting. I'm still eating what I want, I'm just watching my portions. I'm not depriving myself so I'm having a much easier time. I hope to reach 10lbs by next weekend!

    Yay OC! That's awesome.

One thing that's really good when you need to snack are almonds (since you mentioned peanuts)....much better for you than peanuts...and so yummy.

Their nutritional profiles are basically the same but one is hard pressed to eat a raw and unsalted peanut so to get rid of surplus sodium go with almonds.

I love almonds! Didn't have any around the house though. I'll have to head to the supermarket tomorrow and pick some up to snack on.

I'm starting to play racquetball with a friend of mine. I'm not very good, but its fun as hell! We can play for an hour or two, and its a great workout! If i can do that three or four times a week, I'm set!
