What you are referring to is called the blue screen of death (BSOD). This is usually cause by bad graphics or bad RAM (which means this is probably a hardware problem). The first thing I would do is run a ramtest http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Memory_Diagnostic_d3955.html. Use a working computer to burn that file to a disk and boot your malfunctioning computer from it.

If your RAM passes (10 passes no errors), then try and get ahold of a video card you know that is good and stick it in your computer.

If replacing your video card does not fix your problem, there could be several causes for the BSOD. I would try wiping and reloading windows on the computer at that point.

it sounds like some critical system file of windows is corrupted and keeping windows from booting. If you can't get into safe mode to create that log, you can try a chkdsk.

To start a chkdsk, boot from your windows CD and press "r" at the first screen. This should bring you to the recovery console. after you have logged into a windows installation (assuming you can) type "chkdsk c: /r" and press enter.

I had the same issue, BSOD and removed my wireless PCI card, unistalled the software, rebooted, reinstalled the software, rebooted and then reinstall the PCI card. Problem solved. Good luck!:-D

A BSOD can be caused by just about anything: drivers, RAM, failing hard drive, corrupted Windows files, failing motherboards, solar flares, disturbances in the Force.
