I have tried to hook up an IDE Maxtor 200g hard drive to a Sata hard drive system, but windows will not open. I bought the necessary converter for IDE to SATA system but windows won't run. Do I need to unplug the SATA hard drive first then install windows to the IDE hard drive then hook the other one back up?

Windows XP requires drivers to work with SATA drives, even if you use the adapter.

my question is, do I install windows first on the IDE HD then hook the other HD up?

XP does not support SATA out of the box. You must add it yourself. In order to install Windows XP on your IDE HD connected to an SATA port by an adapter (or an SATA drive), you will need the SATA drivers for your motherboard. These should be available at the motherboard or PC manufacturers website. If you have a floppy disk drive, follow the directions given to add the drivers to the floppy disk and install them at the F6 prompt during the XP installation. If not (or if you would like them to be installed automatically), you can add them to a custom installation disc you can make following these directions: http://icrontic.com/articles/slipstream_windows_xp

XP supports SATA. It needs drivers for a RAID setup.

Surferman, NMIP! Can you list the specs of the computer in question? And are you on a SATA RAID of any type, or just using SATA drives?

Windows XP does not ship with SATA drivers.

surferman08, if you are looking for some other way to to install XP onto any drive (SATA or IDE with adapter) plugged into an SATA connector, there isn't. You must install the drivers from a floppy disk at the F6 prompt or slipstream them into a custom disc so they load automatically.

Try entering the BIOS and set the computer to boot from the IDE drive. To simplify the process, you might want to unplug the other hard drives and just have the one you want to use plugged in.

Not true in my experience. RAID drivers require the use of a floppy after the F6 prompt. XP does have SATA support. I have 2 computers with SATA hard drives running XP. I installed WinXP on them just using the CD. And to test my theory, I booted my gaming rig with an old WinXP Home cd. In a SATA CD/DVD drive. It worked and gave me the option to install XP on either of my SATA hard drives. No floppy needed, unless you want a RAID. Perhaps Service Pack 2 helps? Not sure, just my experience.

Of course it looks like Surferman is installing Vista, which I have played around with, but never installed. Hopefully more knowledgeable folks can help with a Vista installation. :cool

Sorry Surferman, I misread your first post.

Is the drive seen in the BIOS using the IDE or IDE/SATA adapter? Can you boot into Vista and 'see' the extra drive?

If I am understanding you right, you have Vista on Drive C:, and want to setup a dual boot with XP on an IDE drive using a IDE/SATA adapter on drive F:?

I have called an talked to a tech at BestBuy and he told me that it would be at least $250+ for them to do the work to install the hard drive. I told him, no thanks , I'll stick with what i have and left it at that.

    Thanks for all your help.
