Is the Lounge now only for serious discussion?

Or is this a place where there is open discussion of some topics Non-geek?

(question from a member who remembers the Lounge of a few years ago)

    :confused

I would say it is pretty much open for anything. As long as it is PG rated. Why, something on your mind BOOMM? Post away...:cool

lol...seems like it lately, doesn't it?

I think people take the 'PG rating' thing too seriously (not the owners and admins, btw).

Everyone is so worried about offending others... and some are easily offended. (sorry if I've offended anyone :-D)

BAH, folks really need to grow a little thicker skin or stay off the internet.

BTW have you seen PG movies lately? :p

Hell no. I'm not sure there Are PG movies anymore! :-D Oh wait...that was your point, wasn't it? heh

I'm pretty sure our resident 13 year old doesn't even see PG movies. ;)

I concur on the skin thickening idea. Have not been to a movie in a while. Just to dang expensive! I need the $ for overclocking and FAH! :-D

Yeah, I have a pretty low-rent vocabulary, and I was just talking about linux or hard drives or something--I forget--and got told to quit my bad language...kind of embarassing...but in a cool way (I'm 57 :p) ... no problem, I understand: I gotta grow up some day ...

But I figure the lounge was so we could let off steam, talk about whatever...since then, only time I've seen any weirdness, was when somebody was kind of cruel to some lady, and they removed his posts...and my retaliation posts...nature of the internet, all that...

I just try to avoid politics: here, mom's, everywhere...but one man's music is another man's noise, and it's easy enough to just stay out of stuff that is just flamebait...

This really is a good site, and they do so much right, that I'm not going to nitpick, as if people don't like it here, they are welcome to wander off...not like there's a shortage of websites or anything like that...

I been keeping my mouth shut really alot lately because i just don't want to offend someone i might come across something and think others will enjoy it but then i think if someone is offended by it i don't wanna be banned for a 3rd time lol But yes i think this sub forum has gotten uptight alittle but not much but enough BOOM i seen many good people come and go because of it too. Still a great place but people need to relax. Now i'm not talking about any one person and Tim and Jim are great people same as the rest of the people but there are afew that need to take a chill pill.

It seems to be a balancing act. This is mainly a computer help site. We also like to have some fun and post about things, but Google tracks all... So I can see where the site owners want to keep it pretty PC.

I agree with Musky, people need to have a thicker skin. But, I am not in charge here, and way to lazy to make my own online forum, so I delete a lot of my posts before they are made, and just try to fit in.

Great group of folks here. :major

I am not wanting to start an uprising.

    As I understand it-

Majorgeeks is a technical support board first and foremost. I appreciate the efforts in malware and software. It has been a great aid in my knowledge of computers (and how to really make a mess out of them). I am appreciative of Jim and Tim putting up with all of us. Kudos also to all the Admin here. ;)

The Lounge has never been serious, except when we lost Gary. The Fruit Loops sent to someone made laugh until my sides hurt. Language? Well, yes this is a family board, so it has to be watched. Offended, bah. Welcome to online forums. Thicker skin is right and some postings you simply read, roll the eyes and move on. rolleyes

I agree. Way more serious. I have had a very busy summer this year & had very little time to hook up to the site. It’s been 8 months & I would only have time for a quick look. Even 8 months ago there was a lot more kidding around, making fun of myself & other people on the site & everybody just laughed about it & gave some good jabs back. Sometimes I couldn’t breathe because I was laughing so hard. I have all ready submitted some comments to posts & the next person that posted added a comment that he or she wasn’t happy with my comment. What will happen next, have some one read our post first to see if it’s acceptable for other viewers? Then reedit it so it says nothing we meant to say. Maybe they should set up 2 Lounges each with different ratings. I agree with what LauraR said (I think people take the “PG rated” thing to seriously).

I remember my early days here where after a day of not checking threads, the lounge would be four or five pages deep with unread topics and posts! It's really calmed down here; not a lot of activity IMO.

'Thicker skin' is one way of putting it. Also, sometimes a bit more forethought and maturity wouldn't go astray. Just my 0.02c from someone that's been around a while.

Humour is great, but not everyone is going to think or relate to some forms of humour the same way. That's just the way of public life, (which is what a post here basically is), goes.

I like a laugh as much as anyone, but better to keep quiet, if there's a reasonable chance of offence, than try and go into damage control after the fact. I can also be opinionated at times, but once again, there’s a level-headed way of doing that. ~ Okay, I’m done. Back to being boring, LoL.

Someone...Kodo maybe....said something that people should take to heart. If you are offended, you chose to be offended. (I'm sure I've butchered whatever it is he saidLOL) There has been nothing on this board (except maybe a few things where the people actually got banned a long time ago) that has been offensive that I have seen. Yet people have gotten upset because it's something they take seriously and someone chose to try to lighten the topic. Or people have actually apologized for stating their view. That's sad in my opinion. If you post something on a public message board, you can't expect others to always agree with you or not find humor in it. If you don't want people to disagree and such, it shouldn't be posted to begin with.

Topics in the lounge should be open to all sorts of discussion...serious, funny, etc.

k...I'm done before I get myself in trouble. ;)

We used to have some very good discussions on here. People would post their opinions on things, and I have to say, I learned a lot from having an open mind and reading some of them. Even if not agreeing with all of them.

Things have changed here, quite a bit.

Laura has a point, but with a forum as large as MGs there will always be people who find humor where others find distress.

I have very strong opinions on certain subjects but could probably be called callous by someone with a different outlook.http://www.clipartof.com/images/emoticons/xsmall2/1238_.gif

I am voting for McCain. Obama is just too socialist for me. Obama is very popular among the young people, but a lot of them don't bother to vote.

Plus Palin in pretty hot. I would rather watch her on the news than watch Joe the Politician. :-D

Yep, but there is the hyper-sensitive type, and the just plain offensive. You don't see them all that often, because they are, (quiet rightly) promptly removed. True, there's a lot of whingers around, but it pretty obvious that if someone goes around posting hot-headed posts, bashing someone else's belief system, country, defence personnel, etc., that it is indeed going to tick off a lot of readers. You don't need to be a Psychologist to know that. Likewise, it's often a fine line between a slightly 'bawdy' joke, and just smutty.
Personally, I'm not bothered what anyone posts, because, to be honest, no one on-line is really significant enough in my life for me to care too much. That said, I've made a lot of good friends on-line, and on this very site. I don't recall ever being truly offended by anyone - a bit irritated, maybe, but that's about all. And my sense of humour is sometimes a bit 'out there', but then that's me, I guess.

I remember the days of old when we would have hilarious threads, and often some crazy Photo-chopping, but those days are to a large extent long gone, sadly. Such is life – we move on.

You gotta admit, they were a gas. And how many message boards are you a member of where you got a cash reward for buying Girl Scout cookies!

I've tried reigniting that a time or two lately, like Speculant's post count deal and a couple photochops, but it seemed to have gone over like poop in a punchbowl so why bother. There's so little comraderie here now compared to then and I hardly know any of the peeps posting now. Not to say there aren't some good folks here, it's just not the same as it was then. Too many despressing threads now by some that think the world or Microsoft is out to get them personally, too many pointless threads like "I got a paper cut opening my Xbox package", and the "blowing off the board to go eleswhere" games are just plain laughable when the people start coming back under different usernames and think they are flying under the radar (not aimed at you Kestrel). If I didn't have a bit of fondness for this place because I met Abby here, I likely wouldn't bother visiting any more than I do.

I've actually been nagging Abby about getting some kind of reunion thread going, notifying numerous past members and seeing if a common date to do it can be established. I think it would be a five-pager of the fun like it used to be. But you've got to get the the people back. The people were the reason it was like it was. And I think some of the newer members would fit in perfectly.

Abby and I had the pleasure of speaking to about a dozen members here on the phone, and we often wonder how they are doing.

I said it then and I still believe it now: GT was the main voice of reason and knowledge here. When he died, a large part of the lounge died with him.

Yeah, true dat! :yum I had treats for months, LoL. Never did tell ya what happened to my proceeds. Took my friend out for dinner, and that went all huky-dory. Then went bowling, (big mistake), and she dropped a 16lb ball on my foot rolleyes. A fractured Metatarsal bone later, my thoughts were "Why, oh why a 16lb ball, (when she's only 5'3" rolleyes ). But I did think of you both while I hobbled and she ate my damn cookies!

Most of the oldies are around, but for various reasons/changes in life don’t post very often nowadays. The time zone is sometimes an issue for me, as I'm at U.T.C. +8 hrs, then again, I keep some crazy hours, myself.
Yeah, I think of Gary often. I do miss the old times. I remember when you and Abby first joined and the different life events, (lot of good ones, and some anything but good). A 'reunion' of sort, would be a hoot, imo. Take good care, both of ya, and I'll be in touch soon.:)

lmao...hmmm, I like pointless. I don't think we have enough of pointless. Pointless leads to silliness.

and jeez. Start up some chopping threads! I'm way out of practice, AND would have to learn new software, but I used to be not bad at it. ;)

I'm going to maybe shoot myself after I say this, but some of the bantering threads with zdawg were some of the most fun in here in a while. The kid knows how to joke around. He's only 13 but he knows how to take a joke and give them.

I have to admit that I'm not much of a lounge topic joiner but do post in games or threads at times. I lurked here before I joined and was amused many times by the antics of some here. Not sure if you can get it back the way it was but we all could make an honest effort to lighten it up a bit an have more fun.

I have no time to do it, but Abby will probably try and go with the reunion thing sometime soon. If nothing else, it would be nice to see how some long-missing members are doing.

But if I have anything to do with it, it damn sure will get out of control! :-D

I'm too tired to say what I feel , but a little ribbing isn't flaming someone, disagreement in a controversial thread is a good read (and sometimes a good write) as long as it doesn't get personal, and in this day and age kids are less PG than most of us are. :-D
I am never going to be politically correct and I'm not even going to try. :tas
I'm me and that's it. If I don't say the right word or agree with someone, too bad. :p

And as far as who will win in the election this year: it sure won't be your average citizen!
