    ok i know this topic has been covered a few times but i have tried everything people have advised to no avail.

    i recently aquired a mcgreggor BG100 background amplifier (100 watts into 4 ohms) which i intended to use as a preamp for recording onto my pc, i plugged it into the front mic socket and it worked fine for about half an hour then all of a sudden i got a message on my saying a jack had been unplugged (which it obviously hadnt) and as a result i have had no sound since.

    my pc is a E-system 3.ghz dual core processor, 1.00 gb memory, vista home premium 32 bit os, and uses the ac97 sound drivers for onboard sound.

    here is a list of what i have tried so far in my attempts to rectify this problem:

    system restore

    checked all sound properties

    re-installed drivers

    attempted to uninstall realtec drivers from programs and features but recieved an error saying that setup could not complete the operation

    i have been into the bios (which i hate doing) and attempted to find the on board sound in there but can not find it

    when i put media player on you can see the sound playing in the voume icon graphic in toolbar but no sound coming thru speakers

    no inputs or outputs recognised when anything is plugged into them

    pc sound will not record to a 3rd party program (ie goldwave audio editor)

    speakers do work as tested thru amplifier on their own

    computer says all sound and audio devices are working properly

    can someone please help me im going stir crazy without my sound and as a musician you can obviously see how important this is to me

    What does Device Manager say about your Audio drivers?
    For Vista: Go to Start>Control Panel>Device Manager
    In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
    A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

    Are you sure it is AC'97 drivers and not Realtek HD?

    Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers.
    Upload the report as an attachment.
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
    When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
    Now come back here to your thread.
    Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box (near the bottom of the page), scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box.

    Your report got lost. LOL

    I'm going to take a stab here. I'm guessing and hoping for your sake, that it is merely a driver problem.
    So, install your motherboard chipset drivers.
    (can't post a link 'cause I don't know what board you have, yet.)
    Then reinstall your audio:
    Realtek High Definition Audio for Vista

    The reason I'm suggesting the driver reinstall is because I don't know if you did install the chipset drivers before your last try.
    Also, I am pretty sure that this is a complete driver package.
    (It has always worked when others didn't)

    If that doesn't work re-attach a report.

    The bad part of what I'm thinking, (and I'm not real qualified here), is, is a PC able to handle that preamp plugged into the mic jack??
    Did something burn out?

    hi musk dunno why that report didnt attactch lol my motherboard is a Foxconn 45CM/GM (LGA775) and as for the preamp theoretically it shouldnt have blown or nurnt anything out as it only emits 4ohms thats less power than a normal omnidiretional mic ive had a laney k35 100 watt amp plugged into the pc before and it was fine so cant see it been that least i hope not lol will look for the chipset drivers and do what you suggested thanks for the help ill let you know if it works

    are we talking about the ports on your front panel or the ones on the back of the motherboard? If front panel- one of the cables could have been knocked loose.

    I should have asked this before.
    Is Realtek HD showing in Device Manager>Sounds, Video, And Game Controllers?
    Is the HD Audio Controller showing in Device Manager>System Devices?

    In Control Panet>Sounds.
    Are the Speakers showing a green check mark in the Playback tab?
    Is Realtek the default device? Working?
    Double click on Speakers.
    Is the device enabled? Close the Speaker Properties window.
    Click configure
    Is your speaker type chosen?

    In the Recording tab.
    Is Realtek the default device? Working?
    Double click on Microphone.
    Is the device enabled?
    Now go to Control>Realtek HD Audio Manager
    Double check that Speakers and Microphone have a check mark and your speaker type is chosen.
    In Device Advanced Settings (the attachment shows the settings I use) Try the optional settting.

    ive checked all those settings and theyre all as you described i tried the alternate setting on realtec device advanced settings and it made no difference, its both the front and rear sockets that arent working

    I need an answer for this. :)

    I re-read your first post.
    This didn't ring a bell at first:
    But now it does.
    Go into BIOS and look for Azalia (that is a Realtek codec) It will most like be in Integrated Peripherals and posiblly in the PCI area. Make sure it is set to Auto, Enabled, or On.

  16. sixstringwizzard

    sixstringwizzard Private E-2

    yup realtec is showing up in device manager and hd controller in system devices is there and both show as working, ive had another look in bios and still cant see anything remotely like sound codecs, looked for azalia and its not there

    I'm not gonna be able to do this until later tonight, but I'll try to track down a manual for your BIOS and see what it says about the audio.
    I'm in the process of starting to move into a new house.

    But I will difinitely post something within 4 hours.

    This is plain weird. I found a pdf manual of sorts for your motherboard. It does NOT show the audio in BIOS either. :confused
    Did you look in Integrated Peripherals>Onboard Device?
    This is confusing to me.
    You said both the HD Audio Controller and Realtek Audio show installed, without problems.
    You said you have installed the chipset.
    You checked all the sound properties and settings.

    You had sound at one time, so there IS a sound chip.
    I'm back to thinking it is a chip failure.

    The only way to really be sure is to find the audio in BIOS and make sure it is not disabled.

    WOW, exactly 4 hours.....I thought I was late.

    yup ive checked all those things havnt got a clue bout finding the aduio in bios

    Could you try uploading the Everest attachment again?

    OK this is a tough one. I don't see any software that might be conflicting.
    We have the right Chipset and Audio drivers.
    I do see a couple of things I'm not sure about.
    And further down is a Realtek HD OEM driver.
    Uninstall the Realtek HD through Control Panel>Programs and Features.
    Then run the registry tool in CCleaner Slim (very safe tool)
    Now reboot and see if Windows will install the OEM driver

    ok did as you suggested it reinstalled the drivers after reboot but still no sound through speakers, im contemplating a full format of the pc (if i can find enough discs for all my files)

    Make sure your Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
    Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
    Right click on it and choose Properties.
    Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

    OK, we've tried just about everything I know of and checked all the settings that would affect audio.
    This is sometimes the problem:
    Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator
    Scenario One
    You DO have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under Device Manager>System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Right-click “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click “Update Driver”
    * Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” and click Next
    * Choose “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Scenario Two
    You DON’T have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under Device Manager>System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Go to the Control Panel and run “Add Hardware”
    * When the Add Hardware Wizard appears, click Next
    * Wait for it to search for new hardware
    * Choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware and click Next
    * Scroll all the way down and select “Add a new hardware device”, click Next
    * Choose “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)”, click Next
    * Select “Show All Devices” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Under Model, select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator”, click Next
    * To start installing the drivers, click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Now see if you can install your driver.

    DId you install the chipset drivers first than the Realtek?

  31. sixstringwizzard

    sixstringwizzard Private E-2

    yup did that before i reformatted im going to go for an option of buying a new sound card tomorrow hopefully that will give me my entertainment and recording studio back lol with it been onboard sound i would have to upgrade eventually anyway i spose, thanks for all your help anyway its apreciated

  32. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

    You need to reinstall the chipset and audio AFTER the format and reinstall.

    But I think it is a chip failure, so your best bet is the new card. :)
