Desktop Gone, Replaced with Screenshot?

Hey guys, I'm brand new to this forum. I normally can work through my computer issues, but im stumped here.

About a week ago a friend was using my computer and acquired malware of some sort. What it has deleted ALL my icons off of my desktop, and replaced the background with a screenshot of what my desktop was..this way it looks like my desktop is still there with all the icons.

After thoroughly searching my computer, i couldnt find the files and i'm scared they've just been deleted

It wouldnt be too big of an issue because im simply going to format the hard drive and start fresh instead of messing with trying to remove all the malware or w/e it might be. The problem is that there are 2 files on my desktop that were not shortcuts..and that i desperately need. I normally only keep shortcuts on my desktop, but these files were only needed for ab 3 weeks, and so i simply just stuck them on the desktop.

Any ideas as to how i might be able to find this file before i format my computer??? everything else on the computer is acting normal, its simply the desktop is gone.

 

Im using windows vista, turion 64 processor and a geforce 7150 graphics card and 2gigs of ram
