Wow, - just wow! Do some people really think an on-line game is that important that it’s worth going to the police and going to jail for? The term "Get a life" comes to mind. rolleyes I've killed entire civilizations in videogames, but I do know it's just a game, (or at least I think I do, LoL!).

    Awesome...a real-life Matrix situation!

Just goes to show the power of the online gaming world and how people do struggle to detach from the two worlds. I'm guessing we will see more and more of this in our media as people enter the bipolars of reality and virtual reality and cannot separate the two.

Erm...very disturbing indeed...so HOW pray tell..does one go about successfully KILLING an avatar? Don't they just pass out for a few minutes and respawn usually? :-D intriguing....

Maplestory is pretty hard on avatars if I remember correctly. But still, maybe they'd have preferred she take a knife and jam it into his heart instead.

She's not actually being charged with anything worse than hacking, which at most is a charge that should be filed by the game creators. He should have been smart enough to change his password.

I've seen a few news reports of this and they all start the same a woman is looking at 5 years for killing an imaginary character, they talk rubbish for a while about how the world has gone mad then towards the end of the story they sneak in 'she hacked' and everyone goes "Ohhh right."

    Media hype:-D

^I agree that it's media hype, Rikky. But am I the only one who thinks it's beyond odd that someone even has an 'online spouse'??? Is that normal in those games?

Bah. They should just imprison her avatar for the "murder". And then fine her for the hacking, and hold a fundraiser to pay for whatever therapy is needed to teach this woman that killing someone, in-game or outside of game, just because they hurt her feelings, is both immature and counterproductive.

The internet stopped shocking me a long time ago:-DIf part of the game is to have a family then it isn't odd IMO just part of the game,The Sims I believe you have to do similar things raise a happy family ect. although I've never played it.

The Strangest game I've ever come across by far is Airline pilot simulation, there is a group of guys that run their own fake airlines in which they are the pilots,it all sounds good until you realise they play it in real time actually flying the 8-12 hour flights, they sit at their computer with their flight stick staring at the digital horizon which barely changes until their 'shift' is up,its basically sim work :-D

lol...I guess. Not much on the internet surprises me either. I've been on it on social forums for a long time now. I have to say though, I've never heard of an online spouse. I also have to say your airline pilot sim is even more bizarre.

It's fairly common in MMOs, not just MapleStory.

Looked like triple Es to me... Thought this thread was about some guy not mowing the lawn and his wife deleting his game from PC to get even.

You don't need me here. Kestrel obviously has this situation well under control ;)

The games where I've seen people do an in-game marriage, it was usually to signify a deep friendship or other relationship that was formed in the game, between the two players. It was considered personal enough that you were not expected to consider it if you had a partner outside of the game, married or otherwise.

That's what I was wondering. Are these marriages advantageous to the game, or are they emotional. I guess they are emotional. I don't get that. I do understand online relationships, but if you feel that strongly about someone, you would think it would progress to the RL level, not just avatars getting married. I'm sorry, that's just sad. If I've offended anyone, I'm sorry, but jeez..get out from behind your computer.

Back on topic, if you feel so strongly about someone that you married them online and THEN murdered them when they broke off with you the least of your worries is getting arrested for cracking.

  37. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Not necessarily emotional, but very personal. There is a difference there. In fairness though, most couples I know of who did in-game marriages had very real relationships outside the game as well, and it was their way of "making it public" If you can't get an apartment together, or show up for parties together, you can at least hitch your avatars. ;)

True, but it's a whole lot easier for the avatar to succeed at the Chicken Dance. :D
