For all the years I have been hanging out here...this lounge has become more and more like lunchtime at a high school cafateria!! Granted I do pop in and out, but I have hung around these parts for quite a while now and it seems as though it's getting harder and harder to figure out who would like me to sit at their table with them!!

Just had to get that off my chest cause I really do like this website/place and I VERY frequently refer people to it and tell them how proffessional and friendly the people are here, whether it is for help or just to socialize. I will continue to use majorgeeks for my help and software researches, so please, do keep up the good work!!

As far as the lounge goes, enjoy and I will just watch from a distance. ;):)

    Hey rog :)

Are you saying it's clique-y in the lounge? If so, I'm left out too 'cause I know I'm not part of any 'clique'. I just kind of post in the threads I feel like posting in. Sometimes I post a lot, sometimes not at all.

I think there are regulars in here, but I think that's the same at all forums.

Personally, I think it's a shame that you aren't posting in here because I always enjoyed reading your posts. They always added to a thread.

I would not say it's clique-y Laura but in the time i have been here it has changed dramatically.
It's still the best website by a long way for problem solving but it would seem that the social aspect of the site has slowly drained away, whether that is by accident or design i could not say.
I know that MGs is primarily a help site but it does need a social side as well because it needs members to stay with us and not just come in when they have problems and the go away until the next problem.
This is MA and CPs site and they can have the final say as to how it's run and i am not in any position to criticize that nor would i because i have learned such a lot from here.

I don't notice it on here as I would notice it on other forums.
I think there's a great crowd of people here, and to get more out of it you have to give some (if that makes sense?)
Just do what I do and post crap in lots of threads and then people will become sick of you, then find you funny/accept you. It worked for me :)

I can’t say that I am into being in a clique but if the post catches my interest I post if not, not. Sometime like acting like I am back at college and just post for the fun of it, that is when I have a bit of time at work waiting for some of my jobs to finish running on the Main Frame. But all in all I find this a great place to get help and hopefully to give a bit. I have not been here that long so I can’t comment on the past

I'm the same - there is a change in here, though. Seems to me there's a lot less regulars posting in here, but maybe that's just me.

Maybe it's just a slow time on the forum, but I haven't been here long enough to know that for certain.:)

Seems like I hear this on just about every site I've been on since the web got "created" , and a couple of sites I've administered or moderated, which is that: once you've been on a site a while, you really miss "the good old days, when we were 'tight', etc"...and start thinking that the "new crew" is lame, or "don't get it" etc., etc...and "whatever happened to all the regulars, etc., ect., etc.,,,...

Hell, I used to hear the same stuff from the WWII vets in the V.A. hospitals when young whippersnappers like me were just starting to show up, after the last "foreign adventure" that went south...

And I've been on the internet since since before mosaic, in the listserv and lynx days, no 'gooeys' haha...and to me, ain't nothin changed...and I just try to flow with it and be reasonably friendly about the whole thing...good book deals specifically w/this, came out before most of you were born, hell before most *computers* were born:
    Future Shock

The only constant in this world *is* change...

    Best wishes...

rogvalcox, I see, where you're coming from. I've been a Mem of forums (a few paid for and then some free and not in MG lines ie) which came to a crawl for no reason - I was questioning as well.... Being a newbie here, who has lurked for most, and learnt a lot in the bargain (for free) I'm only thankful.

In the lounge as a new and non regular member (.60 post count) I can see/view a lot of old friendship's clearly evident. As already mentioned, your old friends would like to see more of you here. After all, all it takes is a "bit" or a "byte". :wave

EXTREMELY good point you made there. You hear it all the time no matter what forum you go to.

You do learn that things are constantly changing online...sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad. People come and go. ::shrug::

Anyway, as I said before, I do wish you'd post more.

Got me, i find people here to be friendly and helpful, any time you walk into a new crowd, your going to feel uncomfortable and groups already exist. Its sort of like saying your pissed because its raining out and you got wet.

Nah, seriously, it happens to all websites, particularly forums. Sometimes that nasty little thing called Real Life intrudes, or like me, you completely forget to check a particular website. Sometimes you just can't get in because of internet or computer problems. It happens and it's nothing to worry about. Like the ebb and rise of the tides, the paradigm will shift in the other direction eventually.

You mean you don't spend all your waking hours surfing MGs and posting madly in every thread you see, to make sure the forums thrive and grow? :eek

    Shame on you! :boxing

Hey Roger. I can best answer your 'concerns' by a parallel, to so-called real life, of which the i-net is part a part of.

In life outside of the net, you don't expect everyone you meet or run into, to be your best friend, or even like you at all. Likewise, you don't expect all friendships to last forever, circumstances and people change - sometimes for the better, sometimes not. You don't get depressed just because you’re not accepted into every social group or conversation, or get upset because not everyone thinks you’re funny and witty.

Not a lot of difference on-line, as at the end of the day, you’re dealing with a real person at the other end. (The not-real people soon get found out, and generally don't last long).

Where there IS a difference, is that it is much easier to communicate and be heard on-line than in R.L. As a consequence, it's much easier to form friendships and get help/support, if needed - something which this site excels at.;)

People tend to get rather busy at this time of the year, until after New Year anyway, so yeah, things might be a tad quiet for a while, but it will pick up eventually. As for 'cliques', or whatever, - if there is any, I have no interest in becoming a 'member'.

My opinion, which is a bit 'ditzy' and delusional at times, is that the whole internet//wwweb//online database driven society, is still in it's infancy, kind of like when cars first were getting used a lot, back in the 30s and 40s, and people could travel outside their neighborhoods and hang out, and like-minded people would go on picnics together, and many "clubs" came into being, like the "Eagles" and "The American Legion" and "Moose" etc, and then in the sixties and seventies, when white people flocked to the subbarbs, all kinds of congregating came about, and then in the nineties and now, we are still sorting out the fact that--like it or not--we are becoming an international society, and the old ways are dying out, *no* country is willing to just sort of suffer quietly, now that they know how the western world lives, and online societies, from "The Well" in San Francisco (internet, before web came about) to hepC mailing lists--first one, I created, back in '95, to the modern day GUI and Web Browsers started what we now know...

And again, all this reminds me of once visiting a friend up in Quad Cities, IL/IA border, and his old mother and father taking me to have a beer at the "Eagles" club, and his mom got so wistful for the old days, talking about how happy they had all been, dancing the jitterbug, and being young together, right after World War II...

It can be tough, people are human, and we want security, and constant change can make us anxious for something that we remember as solid and unchanging...but such is the world...sadly, sometimes, but such it is...

Anyone can sit at my table so long as they buy the Vino and Chinese food!

Personally dont see things have changed much apart from the natural progression of internet and forum life the weird and wonderful world it is!! Groups do exist on all forums and like minded folk do engage in threads that take their fancy, but the thing here is start your own threads on topics you like and folk will join in that share your views etc

Forums and the drama that goes on is more like cats fighting or having nookie.... SORRRY Cat_with_9_lives ;)

Forums migrate, they develope and mature, sometimes how we would like sometimes not, but we need to try to develope too as this world is changing and the internet community is expanding, I did say in an email to someone this week that I prefered the internet back in the day when it was just the geeks who ruled cyberspace its was quiet and peaceful, but I woudl now miss the diversity this media offers in relation to meeting other folks from different countries and with differing views of life etc

Hear hear Halo. Well said! Phantom too. People come and go and it's people posting that will ultimately add to or detract from a forum and their member's mind set. I've been here a long time and have seen many shifts in the lounge, some good and some not so good but I ignore the 'not so good' , for me, threads. I may read but I won't bother posting. I prefer the general atmosphere here of folks helping each other and communicating differing POV's civilly even though it might not be palatable to someone else.

It's all about respect for the person on the other end that counts.:)

Not sure what people are looking for in the lounge but I pretty much goof off in here, I'm serious most of my work day.

As far as cliques go, maybe I'm blind but all wander into threads that interest them. I think we all tease more with some members than others just due to comfort level. I tend to interact more with members that post in software or folding because I hang out there.

I spent an hour last night trying to figure out how to help the mom that wants to get into the IT field, a -0- reply in lounge. I'm not knowledgeable enough to direct her, too many differing opinions. So if you want serious there is a thread in need of help... see 10/28 post.

My point is that the lounge is what we make it, we choose what threads to start, read, post in. I choose to goof off most of the time, so many might think I'm a airhead, oh well, it's the lounge and here for us to relax a bit?

@ Halo, I saw that! *coughs up a furball* Happy Hunting, don't trip *smiles*

Cat, I could not agree more. If you want serious (aside from the occasional threads in here on politics and/or religion), we have a lot of forums where people need our help, and often need it pretty badly. My job is tech support, I answer questions and help people get their computers back in working order. Then I come here and I do the same thing, to the best of my ability.

The Lounge is like our breakroom at work... when you're not working, that's where you go to goof off, joke and chat with your co-workers. And when you leave there, you go back to work.

Well, I have made new forums so people interested in a nich type of thing would have someplace to go if they want to avoid some of the lounge stuff. If you have ideas for additional forums, holler.

@ Mimsy, *smiles* now maybe we can go back to our regularly scheduled Lounge that we know and love, I hope.

@ MA, we know you try hard to make this a nice place for all but in the end it's what we make of it and maybe we all need to try harder to find our niche here by being more open and friendly? Don't think you can do that for us... know you will try though *smiles*

  28. Mimsy

MA provides the tools. We do the actual building work that eventually leaves us with a functioning community. And when we need an additional, different kind of tool to build, that is provided as well. It's up to use to use it, of course.

    That's how I see it anyway. :)

That's right: and that's what kept me around: 1st malware, then hardware problems, and sometimes even I can help people...but not as often as I think :-D

Only thing I had to get spanked over--so far--was my cussing online, and I quit it...I hope...

Anyway, you'all have a good site...there are gazillions of sites now, and people who think one site isn't rite, can move on...this site helps people, and a lot of'em don't...

Best wishes, I'm out...big waves coming sunday, whoop whoop...:)
