I have an Asus P5GD2 Mobo and OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. When i install 3GB of RAM in my computer it doesn't start up. I think it has to do with my BIOS but i am not sure cause i wanna have 3GB's of RAM so my comp runs faster. And if it has to do with my BIOS i don't know how to update or install them. Help would be appreciated thank you.

    I found this
I'm not sure if this means they have to be installed in pairs or simply that you won't get the performance if they are not installed in pairs.
    Maximum memory is 4GB DDR2 600/533/400 non-ECC memory
Check that the stick is non-ECC and is DDR2 at one of those speeds.

hello. Could it be possible that 3 sticks are causing an imbalance with 1 pair in use and the 1 stick running solo? Does your machine run with only 2 sticks installed as a pair?

Is there anyway that you could install a 4th 512to match everything up? Still sounds unbalanced to me.

To get dual-channel performance, the only possible combination that will work for 3GB w/ 4 slots is to put matching 1GB sticks in the Channel 1 slots (usually slot 1 and 3), and matching 512 sticks in the Channel 2 slots (usually slots 2 and 4). Also, you must be sure that all the sticks are equal to eachother or at least backwards compatible in terms of clock speed and timing. The crucial.com website referenced above will help you detrmine compatibility.

hey geeksterl. That is what iI have been trying, in my own way, to get him to understand. One 1G+ one 512M per channel would give the 3 he wants, but he doesn't have what he needs.

I initially had only 2 x 256 MB of RAM and did a "scan my system" on crucial.com. They recommended 4 MB for optimal performance but I chose 2.5 GB because my PC would only "see" 3 or 3.5 GB. So I purchased 2 sticks of 1 GB each and added them into slots 2 and 4. It works fine, although it was mentioned here on MG that the 1 GB sticks would give better performance in slot 1 and 3 and the 2 x 256 MB in slot 2 and 4. So yeah, you need to have them matched up in pairs for functionality.
