Spam Volumes Drop by Two-Thirds After Firm Goes Offline

The volume of junk e-mail sent worldwide plummeted on Tuesday after a Web hosting firm identified by the computer security community as a major host of organizations engaged in spam activity was taken offline.

Experts say the precipitous drop-off in spam comes from Internet providers unplugging McColo Corp., a hosting provider in Northern California that was the home base for machines responsible for coordinating the sending of roughly 75 percent of all spam each day.

Now i know why i stopped getting spam in Gmail and yahoo as much. Still got 10k+ in spam in yahoo but now only about 10 in gmail now.

Indeed! Today I got only 3-5 spam emails in my 2 accounts combined, compared to over 30 daily in just one account previously, far fewer in the other one. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts. :-D

I couldn't believe how little I got yesterday. Just like the lowering gas prices, I don't think it'll last.

I don't know if i am just lucky but i get very little spam (maybe 1 per week) on my "windows mail" i get none but i do get them on "Hotmail"

I use ESET Smart security and it works really well but it's not cheap.

Before i only had NOD32 and things did get past it but now i have upgraded my spam is virtually non existent.

Suprisingly, my best email is AOL. I hardly get any in there. My main email, Yahoo Verizon is one of the worst and that's the one I don't give out. :confused

Gmail is pathetic and they don't even give you the option of having it automatically deleted. One would think they are in league or at least getting money from spammers.rolleyes

I just checked my Hotmail account after 8 days,
I had 63 E-mail and 2 unknown (spam)
I have got into the habit of never opening an E-mail if i do not know the sender one of the 2 unknown had 5 attachments and that is enough for me to delete it.
If i am curios i can open it in a safe environment that does not allow it access to the HD.

I never check any emails from addresses I don't know. Can't say I've ever even been curious. I just delete out of hand. Scan spam for emails that shouldn't have gone in, and then click delete all.

I never get spam in any of my accounts:-D But anyway while there's money to be be made in it someone else will start one up,I can imagine people would like legislation written to stop it but senders but legislation of the internet is the last thing we want,I'm sure its coming though whether we like it or not.

the last bit of spam I received was about the Obama/ Mccain votes :-D Apparently I was even subscribed to a mailing list.....goodness knows why....I'm in the UK LOL

Only for now as the servers where shutdown, give the spammers a month and they will be back to full strength, its the same with warez sites, they get taken down as hosts find they are in breach, but then their are hosts around that dont care in china or russia.

Ways and means as too many folk are gullable to fall for the scams sadly, this is a massive educational issue for the internet and PC community, with no clear fix or no-one who wants to take responsability... Hosts and ISP has IMO the most input in this but are blind!

As predicted, the quantity of spam is back in full force. It even has several spam with the sender as my own (secondary) email address. :cry It was sooo good for a little while. :drool

Spam IS inevitable. Just get yourself a good email account that can filter it the best it can. yahoo's been pretty good. Not perfect. I've NEVER had spam on my gmail though,

I get spam mail in my spam box so it's filtered out but still hate it with a vengeance. :mad
