Let us start a dedicated thread here (like the Jokes thread) so all Collector items appear in the one thread for all to see in one thread. I am repeating the "Giant" movie collector DVD here, to start the ball rolling.

Sorry MG rules won't let me paste the same *.jpg twice in different threads, even if I rename it. :cry :( so you will have to check out my post (#8) at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=174534

Also check out my post #1 at the same thread for my "Giant" knife. :-D

Post your collectible items here, please, so we can see items from your collections.

I am trying to scan in various items and the Scan function on my HP All-in-One doesn't perform. After a live chat with a HP lady I am downloading 309 megs of software at a painfully slow rate from HP. As Arnie said, "I'll be back". :-D tomorrow morning OZ time with better news, I hope. Hey Bazza.

It would probably be better to start a new thread for each type of collectible category as some people may be interested in one type of thing and not the other. It would encourage more discussion. :)

For example your knife thread allows people who are interested in knives to participate and MA's arcade thread is good for those that are interested in arcade games.

The long threads in the lounge are probably partially the reason for the individual forums since they got overwhelming and it was easy to miss posts.

There are pro's and cons for your idea. For example, I think it can get too exotic and too fragmented. Let each member decide for themselves. I think I will keep my various bits and pieces under one heading to get Collectors Corner up and going, like I do with the random nature of Tips that I publish elsewhere. If I had split them into Vista, XP, Utilities, etc., there might be only 2-3 under each category. Others can make their own decisions and submissions. Bazza

Finally got my HP PSC 1410 All-in-One working. Even the Scan button works. Scanned a few 12" Vinyl covers in for Screensavers. Now all I have to do is figure out the Scanning defaults and set them lower to MG acceptable sizes. Or get an easy resizer program. More to do yet. :) Bazza

Lots of different things are Collector items, for different folks.

Soime people collect coins, stamps, carvings, knives, etc.

I have a 12" Elvis Picture Vinyl that I spotted before #1 son saw it. He is still dirty on me. :-D I have tried to scan it on my A4 scanner but as it is a 12" vinyl, not all appears. I have cropped the scan.

PS: I tried to scan in the Beatles White Album (numbered) cover (released 40 years ago today) but Scanners don't work too well on all white covers. :-D

Still waiting for others to contribute something or this Forum will die a quick death.

I think this may be the World's First picture disc? (on a 45rpm record). Remember those? ;) It even has a US Patent # 3578539

And is part of my small Vinyl collection.
I have Googled various info on the picture disk without a great deal of success. 2 x Thumbnails, attached.

The horse is Gunsynd, a famous Aussie racehorse, known as the Goondiwidi Grey.

One scan is of one side of the 45 rpm Cardboard cover, plus the same picture on the 45 rpm disk. Tomorrow I will publish the reverse sides. Bazza

Attached are thumbnails, for Side B of The Goodiwindi Grey 45 rpm record.
I am finally figuring out this Scanner and VSO software. :)

As, maybe, the World's first Picture Disk, I hope they appreciate in value. :)
C'mon Guys and Gals, please submit the stuff you collect.

Is a Picture Disk something like a live video recording on a VHS tape or DVD? It sounds like it should be worth money. Even if it's not, it's neat to have something like that. :cool

    Re: World's first Picture Disk?

A picture disk is just a picture on the vinyl. In this case, it is 45rpm record with a song on each side and a different picture on each side. The picture/s is/are there for decoration (and collectabilty :-D ) Bazza

Re: Sierra Rutile dredge on Sierra Leone banknote.

    Banknotes.

It is not often that an asset of the company that you work for appears on the countries banknote.

Thumbnails are 2 views of the Sierra Rutile dredge used to mine Rutile sand that is turned into Titanium, essential for the Space Race, etc.

Banknote is a 10 Leone note (not worth anything nowadays) and a photo I took of a Bamboo model of the Dredge at the 1993 Sierra Rutile Agricultural show.

Anyone collect Banknotes, Coins, Stamps, whatever?

Re: You can create your own Collector's item.

With a bit of forward planning, and lots of luck, you can create your own Collector's item.

Take Grease, the movie, for instance. Apart from the normal DVD packaging there have been 3 releases of special DVD packaging. John Travolta's leather "jacket". Olivias pink "dress" and the 30th Anniversary release of the Rydell "R" letter jumper. If you collect all 3 AND keep them un-opened, they MIGHT grow into a valuable collector's set. But with, probably, 100's of thousands of these "clothing" DVD's produced, maybe not. :cry Still they are nice to look at, and conversation pieces.

See thumbnails of the 3 in an opened state. My 3 are un-opened. :-D Bazza

Another DVD set not released in Australia as far as I know, from my collection. I imported my copy from the USA, years ago. It is opened but still a conversation piece.

From Artisan Entertainment, it was released in a metal case with 4 x DVD's including 3 double sided DVD's (one side full screen, one side letterbox resolution) and looks great. Bazza

PS: Need someone else to contribute from thier collection, no matter what it is. Baz

My mom used to be a "collector" of about anything.... LOL She never could throw anything away. Clipping out of newspapers such as cartoons, you name it, all stored in the attic and neatly sorted by day and year. The attic sort of bulged due to the baby cribs, old furniture, clothing etc etc. Once a year at spring cleaning we had to clean up the attic and put everything back. LOL Shoes she kept before she got married until the day she passed away in her mid seventies. Thing is that my siblings overseas got many things from her which nowadays are considered as genuine antiques.

The only things that I collected for a while were Swarovski crystal things which I liked for a time. They sparkled with the lights shining on them. Now they're in storage. Sorry Bazza. ;)

Re: Collector's Corner-- Carved bed and chests of drawers

One I passed on. :cry :(
Attached is a thumbnail of a fully carved bed frame and 2 chest of drawers.
If you right click, or left click, on the image you may be able to "Zoom in" to appreciate the workmanship. Or should that be workpeopleship. :0 :) Bloody PC crap.

These items were on sale at the Sierra Rutile Ltd. Picnic and Agricultural day in October 1993, in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where I was working at the time.

Price was USD$500 (1993) I considered the price as good for the amount of work involved.

Only thing against it was how as I going to get it back from Sierra Leone (West Africa) to Australia and how much $$$ for Freight and Insurance?

I didn't do enough thinking outside the box, at the time, to realise that I could probably have shipped it back as CKD (Completely Knocked Down) as
"planks". I would have left the 2 chest of drawers in Sierra Leone (or sold them to an ex-pat or well off S.Leonean).

Anyhow, I passed up the purchase and still regret it to this day. Still I made sure I had a photo. :-D Apart from the ever increasing value as a Collector's item, what a piece of Furniture !!
Check out the village huts. The local climbing a coconut palm. Hunter after Elephants.

I thought of leaving it with my boss and he could ship it back, for me, as part of his allowance when he left SRL.

I didn't have that luxury as a mere "contractor". Lucky I didn't, as anyone who has seen "Blood Diamond" will know that the RUF Rebels invaded our mine and one nearby, 12 months after I left and while my Boss and his partner were on holidays in OZ. (Very lucky for them).

The rebels took some workmates as hostages (for 3 months) and looted the mines and employees houses. The bed would probably have finished up as Firewood. :cry

Ah well. :cry What might have been.

Re: Collector's Corner.-- USA Civil War books

You may woner why I have 2 x USA Civil War books in my collection. (see thumbnails). I have always been interested in that Civil War. My Ex is American and can trace her family back to at least President Rutherford B. Hayes. I fact, Hayes has become a first or second name in her family, ever since. #2 son has Hayes as a second name.

Enough of history, back to the books.
Each volume has over 1500 pages, (heavy as hell), and nearly 2,000 photographs in each. Originally published as 3 volumes, this has been condensed :-D into 2 volumes.

A must for any Civil War buff, IMO.

ISBN 1-884822-08-8 and 1-884822-09-6. if you are interested.

    Jimmy Hendrix--BAND OF GYPSYS--Picture disk, 12" Vimyl

The record company's spelling, not mine. :-D

I was given this picture disk by a shopkeeper friend of my son. She knew I collected various stuff.

It could be rare as I could not find a reference to it on Google.

It is a 12" Vinyl with different pictures on each side. 2 music tracks on one side, 4 tracks on the other.

The 3 thumbnails are scans of each side of my record, plus an image of a Vinyl cardboard cover found on the Net. My disk came without a cover, :cry so I don't know if my disk originally came with this cardboard cover. The cardboard cover was obviously used as the basis for one side of the picture disk.

BAND OF GYPSYS dolls are by Saskia De Boer. Who are the 4 artists featured? One is obviously Hendrix (doh). :-D

Go Fred. :-D I don't like most wines. They are usually too vinegary for me. I don't mind sweet cider, although I haven't had any for years. I like Jamieson 12 year old, or Gold, Whiskey. It's expensive and I haven't had any of that for ages either.

There were 500 mil cans of McEwans Blue (UK) beer available in Sierra Leone when I was there that I liked, but unfortunately no-one imports it into OZ. The local Star beer there, was good too. I read that the Star Brewery, in SL, has just re-opened after the civil war. Good news for SL beer drinkers. Bazza

Well, one Spainish themed picture, and a French picture. In the Spainish pict, the Grahms bottle is a 'ghost' (empty bottle.) In the French one, all are ghosts. I keep some bottles for the memories of the evening. The Henri Martin St. Gloria was to celebrate 1 year of not smoking. I plan on having many of those. :-D

A few years ago, when I was working and earning good money, I spent a lot of $$$$ at a sports store on Knives. I spent so much that the Salesrep made me a crocodile skin sheath for a dagger of mine at a really cheap price.

He also gave me a copy of a knife catalogue, not your normal cheap paperback catalogue but a Hardbound copy of Miguel Nieto Knives 1997.

120 pages and 381 excellent knife photos. The quality of the Catalogue and photos are exceptional. I think it was their First edition as well, so is also a Collector's item, IMO.

See thumbnails for some knives in my collection from this maker.

I have both knives in thumbnail Nieto-p59 and only the bottom one in Nieto-p61 thumbnail. The other thumbnail is of a knife salesman at a Railway station. Imagine if someone tried this nowadays.

Fred, thanks heaps for that link. There is an email address there as well. I had never bothered to google for links, for some reason. :-o

The product numbers of the 4 long thin knives, in question, are # 409 and # 410, and # 209 and # 210. Using their Search box, all it comes up with is "Series Bolsillo" pocket knives for the 12 knives on this page (see thumbnail earlier). Not much help as 3 of 12 are definitely cut-throat razors. :-D

Looks like if a "knife" is discontinued (razors = # 136, 137 and 138 for example), the Search box does not find a reference to it. :cry

After 3 month's, the owner rang me and asked if I was still interested in it. I sure was, and drove a fair distance to his shop. I paid his price and took it home. The next day, apparently, the OP came in to redeem the item. Too late for him. :cry Good news for me. :major

Scroll down a fair bit to come across details relating to the thumbnails.
The 32 pieces weight 8 kilos (nearly 38 pounds in weight). Really heavy to lug around.

My Henry 8th and Queen Elizabeth the First are slightly different from the ones shown. Both mine appear to be slightly younger versions. QEI is certainly younger with different dress and much younger face.

H8 is more upright and his hat is on a different rake.
