I am working on a friend's Dell laptop. He brought it to me with the complaint that limewire wouldn't allow downloads due to a firewall issue. I disabled the windows firewall and still nothing. The machine is five years old so I figured it is in need of cleaning. Installed Ccleaner and scanned. Downloaded Superanti Spyware and updated and scanned. Then no internet.Had to use thumbdrive to download spybot, malwarebytes, and Mgtools. Completed by instruction in malware forum. Still nothing. After a week of trying everything the internet offers on this problem, still nothing.

    winsock fix in sas -nothing
    microsoft winsock fix-nothing
    reset renew ip-nothing.
manually enter known ip address, gateway.subnet-nothing.

Called isp and we did get something. If I type the numerical address (google.com = 209.85.171.99) and I get google.
I can ping anything numerical. I can surf numerical.

If i try google.com nothing. If I try to ping google.com nothing.

    Dial a fix also failed.

I am running Windows Xp pro. This has been tried on three different networks. All three have computers connected both wireless and wired that work fine.

There has to be something missing in a registry value. When I first checked for DHCP, it was disabled. Modified the string on 5 lines to enable. Now DHCP says enabled in ipconfig/all.

    Please help!!!

Restarted Dns service and restarted computer and still nothing. In looking at statistics the unit isn't receiving any packets.

ok I'm not sure which solution worked, but it's back online. I went into add/remove and found winpatrol--deleted it. Noticed sp3. Right clicked on my computer and it showed sp2. Went back to add/remove and deleted sp3. Also went to windows firewall and made sure it was disabled. Ran Ccleaner, and voila, it was connected. Downloaded a defrag prog from here and ran. So far so good.... Thanks for the help. Hopefully this helps someone else??
