In the process of "Trying" to build a 64 bit machine.

The problem is this. Vista64 will load...but only in 32 bit mode. The XP64 bit I bought....won't EVEN load.

I researched with a friend for over a month, to try to ensure everything was compatable. Thought we "had it".

    Here's the system.

    Asus, P5Q Delux motherboard.

CAN'T load Either Vista OR XP 64 bit operating systems. XP just says "No", Vista loads in 32 bit............

We updated the bios....no luck. Switched out the Ram to some OCZ 800....no luck. Can't get this system to load a 64 bit operating system. Pittiful....

I'm callin Intel and Asus tomorrow. Like THAT's gonna help.rolleyes

Any Ideas Ladys and Gentlemen? Would greatly appreciate any insight.:confused

Try downloading a 64 bit linux. See if that works.

I did check with asus....just so much to read! I know just enough to be dangerous!!:-D

I did change out the Ram. It would just not see the Gskill as duel channel. Got 4 gig of OCZ, the Platinum. I'm sure hopin maby that's it. Really wanted to load the 64 bit XP, and maby even do a duel boot with 64 Vista.

I'm sure there's just something I'm missin with the P5Q board. Thanks for that link.

The processor in question is not a true 64 processor. I'm guessing that the reason the x64 XP refuses to load is because it's amd64. Intel uses some sort of weird hybrid processor, so it's not true 64-bit. That's why the Vista is running in 32-bit mode. And why XP won't even load.

I never had problems loading with neither XP nor Vista 64 on my AMD X2 rig, can't be that as both OSs have drivers for each.

I have a similar board running a quad with Intel this time and both loaded. What baffles me is why this CPU is so darned expensive. You could easily get a higher end quad for that price if that's what you paid. $600 Try another CPU if you can.

As a matter of fact, we did try another Chip. Intel 3.73 This chip let 64XP load all the way to 99.5%, then came up with an error code. Vista 64 just defaults to the 32 bit install even when you try to load it in 64. The 32 bit Vista works just fine though, as does the 32 bit XP. Looks like I'm just gonna be stuck with a duel boot Vista and XP. It's faster than heck, but still wanted a 64 bit sysetem.

Here's the specs of both the chips we tried, straight from the Intel website. Thanks for all the input guys!!! It'll stil be a FAST sucker! Just wanted to really beef up to 8 gig RAM with a 2 Gig Ram Drive. Now I'll just settle for a 1 Gig Ram Drive and 32 bit I guess.......:( It'll still scream on Far Cry 2 Though!!!:cool:cool

$600 for that processor? I hope you didn't pay that much. You could get a high end quadcore for that price.

    Well......
I figured out the problem with not being able to load 64 bit XP and 64 Bit Vista on the P5Q.

It's a bad Ram controller chip on the P5Q deluxe motherboard. How much does THAT suck!!:cry Now I just got to see how long it will take to replace or Repair.....
Or, If I just say screw it....and run in 32 bit mode, which runs just fine. I really wanted 8 Gig of Ram though, and a 2 gig Ram Drive.

Know How we figured it out???
Tried to load Linux and it basically just said...."Sorry, your Ram Controler won't accept 64 bit addresses."

Once again, I'd like to thank everyone for their input. I wanted to get back with you guys now that I've found the problem to let ya'll know.

I'm gonna see how good Zipzoomfly really is. I bought the board from them on 10/7. I couldn't start assembling the computer till I got all the parts that I'd ordered. Well.....Now the 30 day DOA return may not be valid cause I've had the board longer than 30 days.

Note to self. "Order the board, RAM and CPU LAST instead of First". I've always had real good results with Zip, bought alot of stuff from them, maby they'll cut me some slack on the DOA Request.:-D
