Could you elucidate, as to what issues you have with Vista.
If you are getting a "great deal" on a "new'' PC then ask the vendor/dealer for XP as an option. I see no point in reinvesting in a OS which would need compatible drivers if available. I'd go with Vista. Cheers...

    Hi

I would give Vista a chance, use it for a few weeks and be objective and forget what others say about this OS.

Yes as mentioned you can install what you like on this PC, but as mentioned make sure you can find XP compatible drivers for the PCs hardware, main ones are Audio, Networking and if a SATA HD in it SATA drivers, also if this PC is an OEM like HP, Dell etc be very careful with licencing/support as if you need support and you dont have the default OS installed some OEMs support will not assist you.

Each OEM has various takes on Downgrading and what support level they will take, so just another thing to think about, this doesnt matter to some users as they can fix their own PC issue, but some cannot.

Halo knocked the nail on the head..push aside all the views and opinions of others until you try it. The only reason I hung back on getting Vista for so long was because I listened to what alot of the others were all saying ... shouldn't really let any of it influence you. Once I tried it...I loved it:drool

  6. Vista does look rather appealing after seeing kestrels lappy with Vista on,And there is in actual fact little difference. In fact vista seems easy (dont know what all the fuss is about??)its down to settings /personal preference id have vista in a shot!!!!)
we are meant to move forward!!:cool

I really disliked Vista, and would always talk bad about it, and say all it does is ensure that Linux--and OSX on Macs--will thrive!!! I'd read all the stuff, and could quote how slow and bogged down it was, how much ram it used, and how it wouldn't last, and companies were rebelling against installing it, etc., etc...

Until I actually begrudginly installed Vista, just cuz all my friends had it, and I was kind of working on machines w/it....

And I like it, I like it a lot, and think it's speedy and efficient, and I've still got linux and XPpro on same or neighboring HD...but I'm getting to really like Vista, and glad I gave it a shot, and learned how to use it *effectively* rather than just take what was out of the box...Vista takes some tweaking...but nice thing about Vista, is you *can* tweak it...no sweat, and yet "beginners" can use it too...

    Best wishes...

Absolutely Emms and Maximus, thats one thing at many including myself have found its easy to do many tasks, for one I have not apart from in work as we have XP still, used the Start > Programs menu to launch a program, if its not in the inital reciently used list I just start to type its name in the Start Search box, easy peasy!

I know its also a benefit to novice users in protecting them from killing the OS or adjusting settings they didnt want to by accident, especially my Mom and my sub 10yr old neices, they both have laptops I bougth and setup with Vista and are still working fine no re-installs, malware or issues in the year they have had them.... I couldnt say the same about the XP PCs they used to have.

Agree 100% some say you cannot tweak it like XP, hogwash! of course you can, maybe different routes and tweaks but still can be tailored to your requirements, I'd agree also out of the box it could do with soem tweaking fo settings, but these are not hard to do, most of the tweaks are more to get rid of the junk apps OEMs install if you buy a pre-built PC.

I have no issues with any OS, love them all and they all have plus's and minus's against them, just depends what you want from your PC, each of us are different so no OS is the wrong one to use, just some better and easier to use. Windows and Apple OSX are a more out of the box experience, where as Linux varients do take at times some tinkering and knowledge to get setup right, but thats a rewarding experience.

So no rights or wrongs, but do give Vista a fair go and you maybe suprised, many where

PHEW...by the looks of the responses it would appear I'm being unfair to VISTA. As such, I guess I'll take it as it comes....try it...THEN make a decision on whether I change to XP or not! Thanks to all who responded. ;)

thehawk70, be aware that you might not be able to install XP even if you decide you want to. A lot of the manufacturers do not supply XP drivers for the hardware on newer computers. If you try and install XP, there is no guarantee that you will have sound, proper video and wireless connection working.

The last few months have been such an eye-opener for me, and just this very thing: *most* people I know, who are fairly new to computers, don't realize just how much of this junk is installed:

I thought some of the stuff Acer put in was *malware*, as it even had some sort of browser hijacker installed...and all kinds of junk just recently on my Mom's new laptop, bought at Best Buy or Circuit City, installed w/about five different HP apps, and all kinds of other junk...

just ridiculous, and time-consuming to remove it all, because by this point they usually are well dug-in, and set themsevles up to have *priority* over the Vista apps, which would do the job just fine...outrageous, and it's probably how they make a buck when selling these machines...

it's always the *second* thing I look at, now, (right after amount of ram), when people tell me their computer is "running weird..." Vista usually protects people from malware, unless they're just *determined* to visit insane sites....but the crap these machines come preloaded with, might as well be malware, as end result is the same....it's not *microsoft* that is the problem, but the wretched business practices of computer dealers...ah well, rant over...

Hey there. If your looking for a replacement for Vista I would highly recommend Vista 64bit. Just make sure your new system has 4 gigs of RAM. I am running a gateway FX7026 and I was horrified that it had not just Vista but 64 bit Vista AAAAHHH!!!!!

But I have been very pleasantly surprised. This thing never crashes, I can run it for weeks without any errors (XP Pro regularly crashed if I tried to leave it running overnight). The lack of driver support is a myth as far as I'm concerned. The only piece of software that does not run on my system is the game Shattered Union. I can play old games like diablo 2 without any problems and new games seem to like it too. All my hardware is properly recognized or has 64 bit drivers except for my mp3 player a creative nomad zen xtra and the lack of drivers is creatives doing. They simply won't provide driver support for any product over 2 years old so no Vista support 64 bit or 32.

Vista 64 stores all 32 bit software in a program files (x86) folder instead of just program files. Software written to only look in "program files" will not like it but almost every game or app that I've ever used allows user defined directories so it hasn't been a problem for me except for "Shattered Union".

So give Vista 64 a go. Just make sure you have the RAM for it. I've heard it gets "quirky" on 2 gigs but is rock solid with 4 or more.

Hm. I was a "forced early adopter" of Vista for reasons complex but boring.

I hated it at first. With the SPs it has gotten better.

I am currently in charge of machines with Vista Business (32bit), Vista Home Premium, XP, and 2000, and sort of in charge of a machine with Small Business Server 2003.

The XP machine gives me perhaps a little less trouble than the Vista Business machine, but my Vista machine gets asked to do much, much more.

I think duckfeet's point about the branded software the mfr's load on to their systems is well-taken, but you can weed that stuff out.

Have only tried the 32-bit flavor, can't speak to 64.

I am wondering whether you too have observed that vista does many things much faster than XP, easiest to check among them being - how fast dvd copying programs work, same program on xp machine takes nearly double the time...same goes for both copying and burning... if you have, then what do you think is the reason for vista performing much better in comparision to XP?

Can any one tell me why programs like copy to dvd work much faster, actually twice faster in a computer with vista operating system, compared to same computer with xp ?
