I have a message that keeps coming up to activate the rapid antivirus on my laptop. I know this is not from windows and is a spyware or other virus program on the computer. What is the best way fix this problem. It is on widows xp I think I have service pack 3 on it but may only be sp2. Any help on this matter would be of great help.

Also any advise on virus program ect. I have tryed zone alarm and made the computer slow and had problem, do not like the way norton, macfee take other the computers so you can not easly switch to another security software products.

    Thanks.:p

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please try to run ComboFix and attach the log. If it does not run in normal boot mode, try it in safe boot mode.

You logs show ComboFix running 4 times:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ComboFix.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ComboFix.exe
    D:\ComboFix.exe
    D:\ComboFix.exe

Reboot your PC and only try running ComboFix once and only run it from your Desktop as requested.

Your MGtools log was obtained in safe boot mode. Is that the only mode you can run in?

No can run in normal but when I run the combo nothing comes up on the screen to show its running.

the D drive was the cd I used to try to load the suggestions in Read first. When running in normal mode the computer crashes or at looks like it is crashed with blue screen telling me an unreg. version of rapid antivirus has been detected. then will reboot and run for a while. But will not allow downloads or sercurity sites up.

Will try and repost logs if I get them from combo. At this point though just thinking about reinstalling as not much is on the computer but son's online schooling.

    timW,
Want to thank you for your help on this matter but i have just reinstalled windows on the computer not much data lost. In this case was the easiest thing to do.

but if you can give me a couple suggestions on my other computers.
    1. is it best to have the antivirus software suggested in the read first section installed just incase you get a virus. This would be in addition to having one installed and running. On the computer I am posting with I have installed pctools, as it is running vista.

    2. What software is best to prevent this from happening on my wifes computer, she has managed to get two viruses in about 3 months time. Any suggestion on stoping this.

    3. I know about carbonit and other back up programs but none I have found back up the programs only the data, What is best way to restore a drive if failure or replacement that will restore everything as was before.

Again thank you for your time and help.

You are welcome, though sorry you had to take that route.

You should have only one active AV program...what we suggested in the Read and Run Instructions are anti-spyware programs that we suggest you keep for doing backup scans on a regular basis.

I would suggest that you follow these instructions:
How to Protect yourself from malware!

That is a topic for the software section. :)

    Again, you are welcome.
