XP x64 Locking Up

    Hello,

This is a problem relating to my ethernet functionality. Everything was working properly before I shut down my computer and left for Thanksgiving vacation, and when I came back and powered it back up, I had no connectivity. I was presented with "Limited or no connectivity", and the program will freeze up whenever I tried to repair the connection or disable/enable the adapter. It is a ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard, for which I have the latest drivers. I tried uninstalling the drivers in safe mode and reinstalling them, and even reparing Windows, none of which helped. I am running Windows XP x64. I also tried running the XP Winsock fix.
I did not initially think that this was a malware related issue, but after unsuccessfully trying all the fixes that I could think of, I figured I might as well check to make sure. I ran the "read and run me first", and have attached the results. ComboFix would not run because it claims I am not running a compatible operating system, and Spybot S&D will not install because it downloads from the website, and I have no ability to connect to the internet on that computer.
You have been very helpful in the past with an infected computer of my friend's, and I hope someone is able to deduce my problem this time as well.

    Thanks in advance,
    Dean

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your problems are most likely not due to malware. I do notice that your LSP chain may be broken do to an Nvidia Firewall driver being missing. It shows in your HijackThis log (embedded in the MGlogs.zip file) as

O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\windows\system32\nvappfilter.dll' missing

You need to repair your LSP chain. You could try running SUPERAntiSpyware and selecting Preference then on the next form select the Repairs tab. Scroll down to where you see the option that says

Repair broken Network Connection (Winsock LSP Chain)

And select it and then click the Perform Repair.. button. Then reboot your PC.

If this works the O10 line should no longer show in your HJT log and you may have internet connectivity as long as something else is not broken or missing.

Thank you, however when I went into the Repairs tab in SUPERAntiSpyware, there were no options available to repair. Is there any other way to remedy that particular issue? I did run another scan with SUPERAntiSpyware, and this time it did find something (I attached the new log to this post). I uninstalled and reinstalled the NVidia ethernet drivers and firewall, but when I plugged my ethernet cable back in, it still appears as limited or no connectivity and tells me that renewing my IP address can not be completed when I try to do a repair.

    Thanks, you guys are great!

I don't know why not? The work for me with Vista.

I will probably have to send you to the Software Forum to resolve this as it is not a malware issue.

You can try the below LSP-Fix tool but I'm not sure if it runs with Vista.

    Now download LSP - Fix

    Run LSP-Fix.

Check the Box labeled "I know what I'm doing" and then click on the nvappfilter.dll file (in the “Keep” section) to select it.

Then, Select the >> button to move nvappfilter.dll into the Remove section.

Now, click the Finish Button. When the Repair Summary box appears, click OK.
If it is already in the Remove section, just click Finish.

The LSP Fix did run, and removed the nvappfilter.dll successfully. I restarted and this did not fix the problem, I am still experiencing the same issues with limited or no connectivity and inability to repair the connection.

I thank you for all of your help this far. Do you transfer the thread to software or should I begin a new thread myself?

    You're welcome.
I will move it for you although, if your problem is only with network connectivity, it may belong in the Networking Forum. It can be moved again if necessary.

Are you hooked to a router? You may want to try turning off/on the router or modem. Sometimes routers get "stuck".

I am hooked to a Linksys 5-port 10/100 switch, which I have tried resetting by un- and replugging both the power and ethernet feed. This has been unsuccessful.

Are you running to your router from ethercard?

I have no router on my end, this is in a dorm room at a university, so I plug into an ethernet jack in the wall, which feeds into my 5 port switch, and from there it goes into my gigabit ethernet port in my desktop, which is onboard on my ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard. There is nothing wrong with any of the components up to my motherboard, because I have other computers plugged into the switch which are connected to the internet and working fine. I believe the problem to be with a driver issue even though I have tried un- and reinstalling it several times.

I'm not sure if you have tried this yet, but you should run a chkdsk and a virus check.

chkdsk is ran by opening a command prompt (under start menu, click run. Type in cmd and press enter). When the command prompt is open, type in "chkdsk c: /r" without the quotes. It will ask you to restart your computer...please do. This will repair any software issues in the filesystem and also tell you how many bad sectors there are at the end. Keep an eye on it, as when it finishes it will continue on without giving you much time to read the results.

To run a virus check, download Avast and it's definition files on a different computer and then transfer those to your computer. Don't do this without disabling your other antivirus tho, as two active antiviruses will sometimes lock up your computer.

Question for ya have you checked your dns setting and subnet settings on yours versus the other computers hooked into your Linksys 5 port..?

I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and all five steps completed successfully. Windows stated that some files were repaired, but the connection issue still remains. I have run numerous virus scans, including the read and run me from the malware section of this forum. The logs were checked by a member and it was determined that this was not the cause, but he observed that my LSP chain was broken. I ran the fix for this and it completed successfully but did not solve the issue.

As for my DNS and subnet settings, these are what I recorded from the non-working computer and another computer running off the same switch:

    Non-working:
    Physical Address 00-1A-92-56-9D-50
    IP Address 169.254.3.133
    Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway
    DNS Server
    WINS Server

    Working:
    Physical Address 00-1E-68-77-B2-57
    DHCP Enabled Yes
    IPv4 IP Address 131.128.141.231
    IPv4 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    .
    .
    .
    .
    IPv4 DNS Servers 131.128.1.126
    131.128.1.127

"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:
    Renewing your IP address
For assistance, contact the person who manages your network"

Please note the working computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium and the non-working computer is running Windows XP Professional x64.

Have you tried a PCI networking card?

Okay that now that i see something, The other question I have is why diference in the subnet mask? The only other recommendation I can make is as Senlis said and try a PCI net card?

One other thing Figly have u tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver for your Linksys?

I tried putting in a PCI ethernet card but could not get the drivers to install successfully. As to the difference in subnet masks, I have no idea why that would be happening although it seems like it might be a possible cause of the issue? In any event, I formatted my C: partition and installed XP 32-bit completely from scratch. It presented with the same issue, so I'm afraid that it might be a hardware issue even though there are no other issues with the motherboard. I think I will resign myself to purchasing a new motherboard, but thank you all for your efforts.

You could not get the drivers to install? This sounds like an unrelated problem. What happened?
