So its been quite a while since Apples marketing team put out the "mac vs pc" commercials, not sure how long exactly. Out of boredom, I peeked into the Mac forum which sort of triggered this little rant. I've been getting a little annoyed with people calling Windows systems PCs and Mac OS systems Macs. Has the definition of what PC actually stands for been changed? Did i not get the memo? I was under the impression that any given operating system these days ran on personal computers, not just Windows. This ends my rant.

    Hi Steve

Well any personal computer no matter what OS it runs generally is a PC, however your 1st line speaks to where this strange distinction came into being... Apple themselves in their "Mac vs PC" ads, they segrigated the two systems into being seperate entities, maybe a marketing ploy to say a MAC is better than a PC.

The phrases MAC and PC then kinda stuck and everyone, including Apple sales folk, journalists etc call a Windows based system a PC and a OSX system a MAC.

Kinda love how Apple managed to get a Sean Siler (a Microsoft employee whos in the I'm a PC adverts) lookalike for their PC character.

Maybe in this day and age the terms should be:

    OSX PC
    Windows PC
    Linux PC
    etc etc

:p hey man. yeah i was just really bored and needed something to do for 10 minutes... marketing schemes in general these days to promote products just blows my mind sometimes. not just computers either; cars, clothes, music, movies, anything you can buy comes down to appealing to a population who might want to buy the product, even if it means misleading consumers by using incorrect terminology or flat out lies or even giving a personality profile to people who use said products. "if you want to be like this, buy this product." its really marketing in general that bothers me.

i may have a little too much time on my hands some days...

    Like technohippie :)
Yeah! I agree! But the computers at companies nd schools are also called PCs even though they arent personal.

well they are personal since it doesnt take a crew of computer techs to use it and an entire room to house it in. thats where the term came from.

MAP2 has a spec currently of 900 working Dell Poweredge 650 servers, each with a 2 GHz Xeon CPU, 1 GB of RAM and a 120 GB disk: the disk capacity of the farm alone is 100 TB. This from last time I was chatting to the computing accademic geeks is running neutrino experiments as well as stuff with CERN, and is part of a larger GRID.

Me too Steve, I bet the Profs, Academics and Students in the Physics/Computing dept dont actually do any scientific work they play Battlefield 2 ;)

I just wouldnt mind my work logon account having that as one of the networks I could connect too, have my work done by Monday 9:15am so could have rest of week off :p the buildings that some of these computers are in are superb, not modern glass and steel, but Grade II listed buildings which are all around 1912-14 and architecture of these are superb, walk past them on way to work each day as I work other side of campus.

@Bill, would be a nice idea, even on one of the smaller Nodes, their are around the campus, but feeling is they wouldnt allow it, I did ask if they would on the desktops in the building as their are 10K+ of them but reliability is crucial.
