I'm about to make a purchase (tonight or tomorrow).

I've always bought from Dell. I'm not happy with them and I think they've gone way done hill.

I found an HP Pavilion that looks good but I'm nervous about buying from Newegg. I've always bought small electronic purchases from them, but nothing like this.

Are they good to buy computers from?

Also, they offer an extended warranty:

Worth it? ($64.99 1/yr)and who is Service Net? I couldn't find anything.

    Here's the desktop:

Should I just buy it from Best Buy?

    Help!!:cry

I would hold off untill some more people look at that. Looks overpriced to me, but I always build mine, so I may be way off. The computer looks ok, but the video card is weak, and it seems a bit overpriced.

This is MajorGeeks, what the heck are you doing buying a prebuilt!? :-D

Here's some info about Service Net and their contract with Newegg to help you make your decision. Personally I would rather go with Newegg anyday over Best Buy for parts. However, with a new machine I like the ability to go back and get in someone's face if I'm not happy with an entire complete product ;) Having said that, the prices are much the same for product (same on Amazon too). I guarantee the waranty price will be better with Newegg and possible the service. I wouldn;t want Best Buy to be picking my machine apart, period.

It's pretty much inline with all the other ones I was looking at spec wise. HP always seems to get really good reviews from users. I'm not really worried too much about the graphics card since I don't game. I just wanted one with it's own dedicated memory.

This may be Major Geeks, Fred, but all I am is a wannabe Geek with a little more knowledge than the average user (which isn't hard). :-D So, any time you wanna build me a machine and service it, I'm good with that. ;)

Yeah, the prices are the same pretty much everywhere. There's no way I'm getting it from Circuit City (financial probs). I really like Newegg and Amazon, but I'm not buying electronics from Amazon. Best Buy was my only other option. I don't know where else to get it. Although, I know you can buy direct from HP. Would that be better?

Thanks for those links, Lev. I wonder if they are any good. I would never buy an extended one at Best Buy as I think I could service it myself better than those people from the comments I've heard from people.

I guess HP direct is an option. The good thing about that is it is a one stop shop if any was to go wrong during the warranty period. Purchasing from a store and having warranty with the manufacturer is a bit like having your phone line with one company and your DSL internet connection with another, One will always blame the other for any fault you have and you simple get passed from one to the other and nothing resolved in a timely manner.

Having said that, my HP desktop was new from Best Buy 3-4 years ago and have had no problems whatsoever. I did not take warranty out. I have been impressed with the quality and price (about the same you are going to pay) for the purposes I use it - I am not a gamer.

    Thanks Lev.

I'm about to hit the Buy button at HP direct. They have it there for a bit more than the Newegg price but with free shipping (newegg isn't running free shipping on that).

I really don't want to buy from Best Buy.

I never know whether to go with the extended warranty. On this particular deal though, if I get the it extended to 2 yrs, it will include in-home visits if problems can't be fixed remotely. If something does go wrong, I don't want to have to ship it to HP.

I've had to ship my laptop twice to Gateway. They have paid and even mailed me the protective box (check the HP small print for details first). It has been so sweet and cost effective, considering I've needed a new HD, new motherboard and new CPU in the last 2 years. (As a side comment, while I love Gateway's warranty, I would not buy another Gateway due to reliability).

My first desktop was a Gateway (*nostalga setting in* ;)).

I checked out the warranty info. I would think they would pay for the shipping (I didn't see that), but I do like the idea of not having to send it out and having someone coming to the house. I would think turn around time for shipping them has to be about 3 weeks.

Again, depends how good their customer support is. First time my Gateway went down they had the box to me (Oregon) and out to them (Louisiana) and back to me, all via Chicago O'Hare in bad snowy weather when aircraft were sliding off the runway - 5 days!!! Second time was about 1 week. That for me is far more convenient that having to stay in to give someone access to my machine for simple hardware failure. Only reason I bought it was warranty was cheaper than hardware replacement ;)

That's great response time. I'm just going by my Hanns-G Monitor I had to send back to have repaired.

Well, I'm buying it. Although, I decided to customize. I could get $150-200 knocked off the price because of a rebate on customized machines. I changed the AMD processor to Intel and just went with the 4GB of RAM. The rest I kept the same. Customized machines come with the in home service so I'm not going to pay extra for 2 years.

    Thanks Lev. :)

I think you will be happy with the Intel CPU. I don't have any experience with the complete system builds. Thanks for stepping in Lev!

    Enjoy the new 'puter Laura!

Mine's an AMD Laura...so is my laptop. So was my HP work laptop running Vista I had until it was stolen. I like AMD working with HP actually :)

    Thanks Fred :)

Yeah, the one thing I wasn't happy with on the original was the AMD cpu, so this works out. I ended up with Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q6700. Plus, I'm paying a bit less, so it's even better.

    Ahhhhh!!!

    :-D

Actually, my damn screen started going loco so I had to X out. So I should stay with the AMD??? I can still change it.

I have a couple of E6600 dual core Intel CPU's. Very nice stuff. I think you will be pleased. A 6700 should send your email .2 seconds faster than the AMD can! :-D

Either will serve you well, right now, Intel seems to be the best. But AMD is great for a budget rig, and there is nothing wrong with AMD, unless you benchmark and such.

    lmao....now I'm all confused again! :p

    Edited to add:

I went back and turns out that with the customized one, I don't have a choice. I have to go with Intel...what I changed is just upgrading the Intel cpu a bit. hmmm...that's weird that the AMD isn't one if the options when it's the one that's installed in the same model that is prebuilt.

Ooh, another Quad in town! Welcome!:cool :-D Only thing that I don't like about pre-built rigs is the power supply, which is usually underpowered in my experience, no one ever thinks about that for some reason.:confused All in all it looks like a sweet system Laura! Enjoy.:)

Get whatever gives you the best price and warranty! Honestly, either will work just great for everyday stuff. If you want a cutting edge benchmarking gaming rig, go Intel. If not, get AMD, or Intel. Flip a coin. I would buy Intel right now, but AMD is not bad.

    Thanks augie. :)

Thanks for all your imput. I really do appreciate it. When you are spending the money it costs to buy a new computer, it helps to get some feedback from people who know what they are talking about. It's for damn sure they don't in Best Buy. heh

    Yayy.......awesome!

I hear ya Laura....was in both Best Buy and Circuit City this weekend. It's major commission time for them, which means no time for advice, or sloppy advice.

Btw, my AMD machines were Turion 64 Duo Core

Will this be your first time with Vista Laura? You should like it really, a very small learning curve IMO, and a much better and more stable OS than XP, plus much more secure too. Not to rain on your parade Laura, I hope your scanner and printer are recent and have Vista x64 drivers available, besides your other peripherals.

I'm with augie on Vista. Returning back to XP after my Vista HP laptop got stolen sucked. Just as I was really getting attuned to it too. Looking forward to the next desktop baby to be born in our house :-D

Meh, I'm sure she can still cancel the order, if not then I can save her some headaches by just taking it off of her hands. Hey, I'm such a nice guy that I'll even pay the shipping too.;):-D

Lev is some kind of Mod Admin Borg. Nothing sneaks by her. I mean NOTHING! :-D

And so Lev does not get mad at me, let me post on topic, what did you finally order Laura? I am guessing the Intel one?

    7 kids, 6 grandkids - you'd better believe it :-D gn augie

LOL @ borg - I will take that as a compliment and assimilate it in my hive mind in pursuit of perfection ;)

She went Intel through HP, Fred (also to remain on topic and not have to ban myself!)

It was at Best Buy and the guy was no help at all. I'm pretty sure I know more about computers than those people.

Got the same computer I linked in my first post, Fred. I just went to go buy it direct from HP and noticed I could customize it there, so kept everything except the cpu and downgraded the ram to 4G from 8. By doing that I'm spending (all said) 350 less than than the original on the HP site (I chose not to go with the extra warranty) and 150-ish less than on newegg.

    Yep, first Vista.

:cry I forgot about my scanner and printer, augie! All I double checked was my monitor. The scanner I hook up to my laptop, though. At least printers aren't expensive.

We have an HP Plotter here at the office, and the in-office support is second to none. If you're lucky enough to deal with the same people I have, it's worth it. I guess it'd be better though, not having to deal with anyone.
