Hi. Updated zone this morning and says the avast webshield module has compatability problems with zone's privacy blocking features. Now, the wierd directions to get them to work together is to go into internet explorer, internet options, local area network, check proxy server and put in "localhost" for address and 12080 for port. Seems like a lot of work for this. Did anyone else have compatability issues with their anti-virus/spyware? If not, may just remove avast and find something else.:confused

    Hi

This seems to be more a ZoneAlarm issue over Avast, would be personally thinking of going with Comodo for your free Firewall software and custom install and dont install the AV over changing Avast or go with the full free internet security package of Comodo and use its firewall and AV.

This used to be an issue years ago with Avast and ZA but they fixed it as in ZA fixed their issue, but seems to have come back, maybe check their forums out for other users with same issue and also ZA may have a new update coming soon to fix this, but the workaround you posted is the same one I used back in 2005 when the same issue cropped up, I still use to this day Avast.

ZoneAlarm Free 8.0.020.000 is still the latest version on Major Geeks at http://majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html as at just now.
    No update since Sep 9th.

Thanks for the headsup guys. I'll watch the MG frontpage and this thread with interest.

Seems like ZA/Avast/FireFox might be a bad combination also. I cannot get FireFox to work over the past few days. Going to start by uninstalling ZA to see if that makes any difference.

I've got a NetGear modem / Router, so in theory, I don't need a software firewall anyhow.

Uninstalled ZA, using Revo Uninstaller. ZA not the problem for me. I can log into Opera almost instantly but still cannot load FireFox. Nothing happens when I click on the exe shortcut. :cry

I guess Avast is next in the un-install list, then FireFox, then start all over again. :cry

I would advise that you get a software firewall anyway.

One of the guys that lives in the house owns a NetGear router and it got infected with a really terrible virus called the Trojan.DNSChanger.

It affected my computer. I could not go on to Windows Update because I got re-directed to the MSN website. And I could not go on to most antivirus websites nor get any antivirus updates.

It took me weeks to get rid of that virus.

ZA and Avast both gone now. Still cannot get FireFox to load. Maybe it was the FireFox updates I accepted the other day. Now FireFox is to get the chop using Revo Uninstaller, and then start all over again. :cry Bazza

My Netgear is a Modem / Router Model DG834G with updated firmware, combined with:
Sounds really good, :-D . I've never really delved into those 2 security methods. I've always used ZA with the Netgear Modem / Router, except for one tryst with Comodo Firewall. I will reload ZA after I solve my immediate problem. Thanks anyhow. Bazza

I use Zone Alarm and Avast together. The conflict between them is with ZA's privacy shield, its a sort of encrypted place to store private data like passwords, bank account and sign in information. Since I would never trust even a firewall program to safley store that kind of information, and since I don't even store that stuff on my PC, I leave Privacy Shield turned off, problem solved. You will get the warning when you install Avast whether privacy shield is turned on or not, so if yours is turned off and your not planning to store any private information, don't fret it.

Yes, there is a compatibility problem between the latest versions of Avast! and Zone Alarm but only if you use Zone Alarm's privacy protection features. However, I'm intrigued that you mention that you are also using Revo. It's a wonderful utility but I now have some suspicions about its compatibility with those and other products. Maybe someone can confirm or deny that. Here's the story:

I experienced persistent component validation issues after installing the latest version of Zone Alarm , also a "corrupted" cab issue while installing version 9 of Adobe Reader. Suspecting a firewall problem, I disabled the Windows firewall, updated the root certificates, and uninstalled both Avast! and Zone Alarm with Revo Uninstaller - to no avail! Finally, on a hunch, I tried uninstalling Revo Uninstaller itself. To my disbelief, Avast!, Zone Alarm and Adobe Reader all installed and configured correctly. I then re-installed Revo.

Can anyone explain this? Was this simply a fluke or is Revo Uninstaller surreptitiously doing something to our operating systems that we should be aware of?

Yes - have Netgear and they say to have a firewall.

Read my post #8 again. I have a combined Modem and Router. Not a Modem, not a Router, but both combined in one unit. It also has double Firewall protection as explained in #8 post. I do, however, usually use a software Firewall as well. Bazza

Revo is an extremely powerful Uninstaller, particularly if you use the deepest cleaning option #4. Cleanup! and CCleaner are 2 others I would recommend to those not wishing to delve so deep. Bazza

Wished I could explain it, perhaps someone else can? However from what I'm reading above, it seems that you were having Windows Firewall installed and Zonealarm? If that was the case, it may have well interfered with the uninstalling of Zonealarm in Revo. Anyway, never have more than 1 software firewall installed.

As said old issue with ZA. I still use both ZA(v8.0.020.000) and Avast(v4.8.1296). with no problem, just turned off the 'Web Shield' and 'Network Shield' in Avast. Maybe one of these days I will look into Comodo. What do you use Halo??

While that rule of thumb is very applicable to anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities that load on start-up, Zone Alarm and the Windows firewall are actually great complements of each other. Here's why: The Windows firewall filters what goes INTO your PC while Zone Alarm focuses on what goes OUT, i.e. a REVERSE firewall. That gives you the opportunity of blocking communication with the web by objects that may have breached the Windows firewall by piggybacking on other "allowed" downloads.

Granted, on rare occasions (twice that I recall) Microsoft updates have been known to cause the Zone Alarm firewall to block all Internet traffic - very annoying to be sure but Zonelabs has always been quick to respond with a fix.

In all fairness, Microsoft updates have the potential for wreaking havoc with ANY PC component - even other microsoft products! In the case of an Internet connection failure, you simply have to remember to ALWAYS TRY DISABLING YOUR FIREWALL FIRST before grabbing the phone to chew out your service provider.

    Hmm, read this:

Protect my computer with a firewall: (Pick only one)
    PC Tools Firewall Plus
    Zone Alarm Free
    Outpost Free
    Comodo Personal Firewall

Could you please clarify for me what you mean by ZA being a 'REVERSE' firewall. As far as I know this phrasing is used regarding DDos attacks...... I have been using ZA for years and it controls both outgoing (programs) and incoming traffic (firewall) under the heading 'Log Viewer'. Perhaps I'm missing something and would really appreciate you letting me know.
