    Hi there,

    My computer freezes shortly after starting in normal mode, is ok in safe mode. I looked at couple of sites etc and used some malware programs to scan & delete viruses etc (main one used being Malwarebytes) - all of this had to be done while using safe-mode as nothing works in normal mode due to freeze. My OS is Windows XP - lookin to see if there is anything that can be done or is it a lost cause?

    regards

    I have moved your thread to the malware section.

    Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    Hi and thank you for your response.

    I have run the READ & RUN ME section and still have the 'freeze' problem. Basically a few mins after logging on Normal Mode, the computer freezes and while it is 'unfrozen' does not allow access to IE.

    The problem first emerged last Tuesday 9th Dec and at the time both IE and World of Warcraft were running. An alert message popped up advising that there was a critical issue and asking whether to run viruslab2009. At that point the computer froze.

    Below is step by step as to what happened while going thru READ & RUN ME:
    NOTE: All steps were carried out in Safe Mode

    1. Basic Computer Maintenance: Removed unused programs, ran CCleaner and went thru Start Up and defraged using 10bit Smart Defrag.
    2. House Cleaning & Setup: Wenet thru Add/Remove list for Malware programs - none. Downloaded new version of Sun Java but was unable to install, getting message: The System Adminstrator has set policies to prevent this installation. Therefore did not delet the older versions. Finally set MSConfig to Normal Setup Mode. I checked Recycle bin & quarantine folders to make sure were empty and ran CCleaner on all users including Adminstrator.
    3. I enabled viewing of hidden files per the instructions
    4. Then I ran Windows XP Cleaning procedures. I downloaded all progams as suggested. However could not install SUPERAntiSpayware getting message again: The System Adminstrator has set policies to prevent this installation. I ran other programs as instructed and now attach the logs as instructed.

    Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Not seeing much....however it is a bad idea to have all users as administrators>

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    o If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Drivers::
    F720B7DCD4744AF6

    File::
    c:\windows\be49f4daa.dat
    c:\windows\bemark2.dat

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\Shane McNally\Desktop\F720B7DCD4744AF6

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\Services\F720B7DCD4744AF6]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\Services\F720B7DCD4744AF6]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combo.

    There is no need to quote my replies. :)

    Hi and thanks for quick response. Have already posted a reply but does not seem to be attched to this thread. I not your comment about admins and will do something about that. Also did not realise I was using your quotes :)

    I carried out your instructions and ComboFix did prompt that log called c:\combofix.txt had been created but cannot find it when uploading.

    MGlog.zip attached

    Your logs look clean. If you are still having issues with freezing, I suggest you post in the software section.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
