    Hot Damn!:major
Got my first build up and running this evening. (Actually my first new personal comp since I get all the hand me downs.)
Posted right up and sitting here just being :drool over.

Will post some pics this weekend after I do some cable management.
(Just had to fire it up even tho it looks like a drunken sailor tossed some rope together.)

what an achievement! I can't begin to imagine how I would get on trying to build my own LOL "here's one I made earlier" sellotape and scissors at the ready :-D

Looking forward to seeing pics :)

Good for you & Congratulations!!! *pats lbmest on the back* Brag all ya want..you're entitled.:major

It's a really unique feeling completing your first, from scratch puter isn't it? I remember my first....I drilled the huge holes for the extra fans I wanted, did the 2 hard drives and on and on. Everything went well and I was ready to go but....I couldn't bring myself to hit the power button! I was so afraid I did something wrong I actually sat there for over an hour just looking at it, trying to get up the nerve to see if it would boot and made myself sick to my stomach in the process. roflmao

Before you know it you'll be on to the next one! WTG! and ENJOY!

    Nice!

Ooooooo and so very clean! LOL

I've always wanted to try to build one. Just never had the guts or the money to shell out for what would certainly be an 'experiment'.

I have such a desire to attempt a build from scratch and maybe in the new year i will give it a go.

    Nice graphics card

    Shame it's got no memory:-D

NICE ONE!!!;) Feels pretty good, doesn't it? Pressing that power button for the first time and seeing the POST screen sure does make ya feel good, no doubt about it!! Congratulations on one fine looking machine!! Now that you have the 'building bug,' when are you going to start your next build??

I bet your already thinking of the next build.

    Thanks muchly.:-D
Daggone, it better be clean. I just have to figure a good way to get it off the floor to see the innards and keep it away from the dust bunnies.

I've been working on a parts list for better than a year and finally took the plunge. Oh it feels good, go for it BILL.;)

Hit the nail on the head Steve. One of the many awful pictures should have showed them clearly if I could have held the camera still. Thanks.:)

You just don't see all the piles of parts boxes off to the left side Kes.
That's this weekends job . Maybe if I think of it.;)

    Thanks Stubby.
As to that, the POST screen didn't come upon the first 2 tries and then switching off and on the monitors brought it up. Big sigh of relief on my part.
I need to get this one under my belt first. (And the wife would shoot me if I even broached the subject.;))

    Thanks muchly.:-D
Gawd if I had smelled anything I would have had a heart attack.

    Appreciate all the comments folks.:cool

Hey Laura...I didn't have the money when I did my first one. At least not all at once and I wasn't about to use a credit card and have to pay interest. It can be done even on a budget. Start thinking about what you want out of your system. Gaming, graphics work, simple everyday use, etc. Ask for suggestions from your fellow geeks here at MG then start shopping around for your parts to see where you can get the best deal on what you want. On a couple things I bought I managed to knock $50 - 75 off the price just by comparison shopping. :) Then just buy them a little at a time until you have everything.

C'mon...you know you want to do it!;):-D

*hands over a bucket and box of tissue to slop up lbmest's drool* Don't want to short circuit the new set up with all that moisture now do we? LOL

NICE set of pics! She looks like a real sweet rig and you did a real fine job with the wires. Some people don't do that and I haven't figured out why such an important step would be left un-done. It makes a major difference with the air circulating and for all those other times you dive into the case down the road.

On to tweaking everything now huh? Oh, I envy you ATM!

  17. lbmest

    lbmest MajorGeek

Oh, too right on the tweaking and fiddling.:-D
Already got 2 round cables coming from NewEgg - IDE and Floppy. (I know , old school floppy.;)) Still have my eye on a Solid State drive. Found some adapter plates for current HSF's but will wait just a bit for that to see what my baseline temps are.
ASUS has more options in their BIOS to overclock than would choke a horse. I'm gonna baby this for a bit before I get serious with OCing.
I'm new to Vista so I need to figure all the ins and outs of it first and then will probably dual boot with some flavor of Linux. (Gotta learn some more of that too.)
I have got to set up my folding on the GPUs also.

    I'm rambling, ain't I?:-o
I'll shut up for awhile. Laterz.:cool

Very nice lbmest indeed! Man, you went for the bleeding edge of computing! I can only dream of an i7...:cloud9 :-D Curious to see what that video card puts out. Have a rest before you tackle the folding, it's not as if one spends all night tweaking their PPD eh?rolleyes;)

Nice 64-bit. Nice coverage of fans. I'm jealous of your video card though.

  20. lbmest

    lbmest MajorGeek

My PPD better get up there with this set up.
This is cutting edge maybe for a couple months. Bleeding edge was way up there in price.
I seem to have read in another thread about someone being up all night tweaking their 9800's. Hmmm....Who could that be?;)

I probably overdid the video card cause I'm not a gamer but this might change my mind. I liked the look of that case when it first came out and almost got it for $59 but went out of stock too fast on Thanksgiving weekend.

    Thanks guys.:cool
(I am getting absolutely nothing done at work today.)rolleyes

Hehehe, hey with the memory you got and X64 I'm sure you could sneak in a couple of VM *nix SMPs in there too, your CPU won't even notice the load much unless you want to game, always easy to shut off. Oh, I called it bleeding edge compared to my machine in my sig which is only three months old. Ya know, budgets and all.:)

nice! i built my first custom computer from scratch about a year and a half ago, i think. i pressed the power button, and nothing happened :eek! it took me about an hour to figure out that there was ANOTHER switch on power supply that had to be on the "on" position for my computer to function. i've learned much more about computers since then LOL

looking forward to more pics! (props to you for a SWEET case and graphics card! oh and by the way your posts are VERY shiny now:-D )

I cannot tell a lie. I shamelessly copied the format of your sig. Understated but geeky I thought.:-D
Unless someone is filthy rich, you can't stay on the bleeding edge. The edge moves every day.:p That's why I said only for a few months but I've got a good platform for upgrades now.:cool

    Thanks Halo.:)
Hopefully in 6 months the price will come down on those SSDs and maybe the better half will let me splurge again. (This certainly was one for the books for me.:major)

Thanks Speculant. I'm must say I'm partial to those parts too.;)
roflmao about VERY shiny. (I had to come up with something about halfway goofy for a post title.;))

I was stuck with a 8 year old Gateway 1.4Ghz Thunderbird with AGP video card so this is a hell of a step up for me. (And I like it.:drool)

OK, 2 more pics after some cable management and we will return to our regularly scheduled program. (I'll quietly do some dancing on the sidelines. By the way, my Vista experience score was 5.9 across the board.:neener)

Your posts are shiny as hell and I gotta use shade's to read.

I'm drooling. Fantastic effort. This is so enticing , as I've never built one. I Simply choose the hard ware and get it built.

This really takes me back to when I was kid. I still remember the "Do it yourself kits". Must have soldered at least ten radio kits!! Went on and made my own circuits on a PCB calculating resistance and capacitance and what not. Could never make sense of the PNP or NPN transistors. I simply could not fathom /understand how they handled current :-o

    Great job & Cheers...
