For some reason I cannot seem to share folders and files with other users on my network. I have set up folder and file sharing many many times before, however this time I seem to be having some difficulties.

I go into folder options and enable basic file sharing.
Then I go into the properties of the folder I would like to share, click allow to share click ok. I go to another computer on my network and the files aren't available to view, I cannot even see my computer.

I have also noticed that if I enable the viewing of files and folders on another computer, I cannot see it on this particular computer. I know we should be members of the same network because we are both connected to the same router!

    Any help?

    Thanks,
    Axis

The computers need to have the same network name to be able to share. What Operating Systems are you trying to share between?
If XP, here is some information - LINK Use the appropriate part.
If Vista, here is a LINK

It could be many reason you can't access other pc folder.
If you have a switch, and is programed the way some pc can't access that specifique network, or specific pc.....
    or
    * it could be you are not in same domain.....
    * or you are in same network, but configuration are wrong such Network Mask.
    * it could be the other pc the network connection cable is not pulged well.

    test your network connection!
Try to ping with IP adress from each pc to connect to other pc. see if trace is allow or deny.

    hope this will help

sorry, i have to clear this up.

chances are you didnt configure your switch ports beyond default settings, so vlans or access control lists, etc. wont be an issue.

i assume you're on a home network(workgroup) and not connected to a domain. all you have to do for that is make sure youre in the same, case sensitive, work group.

your subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 if youre using the standard 192.168.0.0 private network addressing scheme. this is set automatically either way; dhcp or static. if you use static ips, you can just click in the subnet mask area and itll fill in the mask for you. this probably isnt an issue here, but worth taking a look at.

It could be your cable is either bad or unplugged...
And do try to ping your other computer to see if you can even communicate with it.
    do this by command prompt.

    to access command prompt:
    start-run-type cmd-hit enter
    type ping ip address
example: ping 192.168.0.5 - hit enter

to find your ip address in your command prompt window type:
    ipconfig - hit enter
    itll look like this
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.150
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

I use Network Magic and it is wonderful for sharing and network printing.

It does everything and you don't have to worry. It also has network lock to protect everything for you. I have a belkin router and it works fine. Network magic is compatible with almost every router.

Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.

If i can chip in my 2 penneth:-

I'm having a file sharing problem (as a networking newbie) in that my beige computer can see my black one, but my black one can only see itself (even with all firewalls off). Anyway if I can't fix it I may come back or post a separate thread (though any sugestions would still be appreciated).

The point I wanted to make though was that I tried Network Magic and I didn't like it. I was dubious about whether it should really be necessary anyway but when I installed it it seemed like a slow and unhelpful programme that pestered me to pay to upgrade for the usefull features.

I gave up on it and found there was no uninstall option in my start menu. I've taken it off from Control Panel now but a quick Google search shows quite a lot of people who didn't like the programme and have had trouble completely uninstalling it. I'm no expert but there you go.

    Hi
I too am having problems with my home network. two out of the 3 computers can share files with each other but the 3rd one has stopped. i can ping the other 2 from the 3rd but thehe other 2 cannot ping the 3rd (I hope thats not confusing).
after a bit of research I've found out that the "node type" on the 3rd was "unknown" whereas on the others it is "Hybrid". I've found a solution to this problem, which is in the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310570.

It says "This issue can occur if the EnableProxy key in the registry is set to an invalid value" and that I should go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters\ and change the value of EnableProxy.

However, EnableProxy is not there. Please advice

    thanks
