The below suddenly happened abd I'm sure it's due to spyware / virus.

When I try to run a program such as Word, I get the following message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel".

I've gone through your "Read Me First" and started the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure. I downloaded the 5 tools but when I reach Step 2 "Installing Tools and Running Scans" I cannot proceed because I get the above error message.

Internet Explorer appears to be the only program I can use.

I'd be really grateful if someone could help me.

    Thanking you in advance.

    Pete

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Let's see if you can fix the EXE file assocation by use below link

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

See the line that mentions restore defaut assocation for EXE files. As long as ZIP files and registry files have not lost there associations, you should be able to do this.

    Hi,
Many thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunatey, when I try to run the downloaded file I get the same error message. Are you able to suggest an alternative fix?
    Thanks once again,
    Pete

Do you mean when you try to extract from the ZIP file or do you mean when trying to run the registry patch.

    Try the below.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you cannot do the above registry patch, see if you can do the below from Microsoft.
