I also tried Adobe 9 and found it a bit slow (not as bad as you) now i am not sure if it's the prog or the fact i am folding with some heavy CPU and graphics so it could have some effect.

I used to install Adobe Reader 5.5 when I needed to read .pdf files, I didn't lke 6,7 or 8 either. After I found Foxit, it was all over for even 5.5. Adobe sux on so many levels, I hate that they took over flash player from macromedia and ruined that too. Idiots!

Now is this Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 as in the full version of Acrobat that not only is a PDF viewer but is also a PDF creator and editor?

Or just the basic Acrobat Reader 9?

Two different products, as Foxit Reader is just a reader not a PDF creator, if you need that functionality too, then your other thread on creating PDFs has options.

Personally didnt find Adobe Reader 9 an issue (lite version as MarkT points out is good), although PDFs if your loading them direct from a webpage over right click and saving them locally do load slower granted. Acrobat Pro 8 I used alot, but now dont use Acrobat Pro 9 as I find it too expensive for what it is when some freebie options are just as good. Personally dont have issues with Adobe as a company as they have served the design work very well, also the amature designers too who all have Photoshop and their Font Packs are invaluable.

This whole discussion is unclear on one point. In your original post, you were comparing two different products, a PDF creator (Adobe Acrobat), and a PDF reader (Foxit Reader). What program do you actually need, a reader or a creator? And, are you now using Foxit PDF Editor, in place of Adobe Acrobat?

Anyone can do a Google search...even if it's really a GoodSearch search.

Here are three three possibilities from the search.

well, im really happy with foxit reader, the thing is, i dont need to make my own pdfs, the only thing id really like is to easily be able to make a pdf fillable with text, u know, like rebates are in pdf and i like to just type in my info instead of writing it by hand

but none are fillable, so but it is possible to make them fillable, there are guides for that at slckdeals i could post, but i was wondering if there was a program out to do it quickly and easily

    thanks

Such forms will not be fillable unless the creator made them to be fillable. I have downloaded numerous rebate forms over the years, although none in recent months, and don't recall any that were fillable.

i found this at SD but i have not trie d it

to make a rebate form fillable you'll need to create text boxes that overlay the existing blanks, and do some formating tricks like making the text fit the size and never expand past it.

if you have pagemaker, open that up, then open the rebate form in there and overlay the fillable stuff, then it'll be fillable when opened up by any other acrobat program.

I don't have any of this at home so I can't help, but I've put some forms together from scratch for work stuff.

Foxit Reader is an excellent product, and since it's free I won't complain. However, I will add one warning: What a PDF looks like on Foxit Reader is not always be how it looks on Adobe Acrobat. For example, if you type up a resume and convert it to pdf using (add/built-in) app X, and open it with Foxit to make sure it looks okay, then that may not be how it looks to a recruiter who open it with Acrobat. Just a FYI.

    Re: foxit

is there a way to make a foxit reader printer?

  19. usafveteran

    usafveteran MajorGeek

You mean so you "print" to a PDF file rather to an actual printer? No, you can't make Foxit Reader a printer, but plenty of PDF converters that serve this purpose are available. One I use is PrimoPDF. When installed, it appears in your system as a printer. Select it as the printer when printing anything, and it "prints" to a PDF file.

No and No - I typed up several resumes/proposals on MS Word and Scientific Workplace. I saved them as PDFs using whatever plug-in or built-in app was present, but opened them with Foxit check them over before sending/uploading. A few days (or weeks) later I realized they looked a little different when viewed on Adobe Reader/Acrobat, in terms of little details - some of the alignments were off, some separator lines were off in length and emphasis, boldface was a little different - stuff like that. Perhaps Foxit and Adobe applied different fonts for some of the content...

In any case, I now use Adobe Acrobat for everything work-related since that's what everyone else uses, though I constantly wonder how a program that occupies a whopping 2GB on my hard drive (Acrobat 9 Extended Pro) cannot even provide straight-forward, hassle-free editing functions for typed up PDF content...

Everyone else does? They all have Acrobat, which costs hundreds of $? Perhaps I'm mis-interpreting "everyone".

I'm a Ph.D. grad student - by "everyone" I meant all the profs and other students, or anyone who might open a resume or research proposal of mine. The reader is free of course, and I think Acrobat Pro is available on all university computers. It is the current standard for PDF readers for universities and corporations, so that's what I assume 99% of PDFs get opened on.

I, too got sick of Adobe. I found PDF X-Change to be a great replacement.
Doesn't seem to bog down my system. Good quality in the pics.

    Enjoy.
