recover data on hd w/o jumpers

    My Dell desktop died, and am trying to recover data on hd. Removed it, and it is a Hitachi 7K80 (HDS728080PLA380) Serial-ATA. Hitachi says it operates without jumpers. Will I be able to plug it into one of the USB External Hard Drive Enclosures (Sabrent?), if I can't set it to slave?

    No you most likely won't be able to use the drive in an external HD enclosure unless the drive is extremely similar to the drive in the enclosure.

    I'm guessing you have connected the drive to a computer and the computer boots from the drive you have just installed instead of the windows drive hence you would like to set it to slave?

    If so you need to set the options in the bios usually by tapping del. as the computer boots to boot from the orginal windows drive,enter the bios of said computer find boot options and set to boot from the original windows drive in the boot order menu.

    I don't know about SATA but the instructions for the drives I've put into external USB enclosures indicate that the drive must be jumpered as a master.
    The computer will boot from the internal drive and then you can collect your files from the external drive in the enclosure.

    Just make sure when you purchase an enclosure that it mentions SATA drives can be placed inside.

    Forgive my ignorance amite I was thinking of a pre built harddrive enclosure such as an icy dock,plodr is exactly right.
