Currently I have Office 2000 and have been having problems with Excel for a few weeks. The program will not open and keeps asking for the disk. The problem I have is that Hurricane Ike destroyed my home and the disk is long gone.

My question is, if I purchase the 2007 upgrade for Office, do you think this will fix the problem with Excel. I was trying to ask Microsoft this question but they want $50 for the info and I think that is ridiculous!

    HI

As well as the message asking for the Office disk, is their anything else in that message box?

Do the other applications of Office 2000 work ok like Word? if so try opening Word and going to Help and then Detect and Repair and see if that fixes your Office Excel as it repairs all of Office, only problem is that unless on install the Office MSOCache folder is missing from the C: drive it will ask for the CD.

Installing Office 2007 should fix the problem as you'd be installing a new version of Office, but you need to be using Windows Vista or XP SP2 or above

I have XP SP2 and all other Office is working just fine - I have had no problems with Word, Powerpoint or Access.

When I try to open Excel, Windows Installer opens and says its preparing to install. Then, it says, "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Excel 2000 SR-1." Then, it says, "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert Microsoft Excel 2000 SR-1 disk and click OK." Then it says, "Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Excel 2000 SR-1. Windows Installer cannot continue." Then a box opens that says, "Problem with Shortcut. Fatal Error during installation"

    Hi

Likely you will need sadly the CD to get around this, but just double check something for me as at times Office installs a backup cab folder of the installer files which is hidden in the root C: drive, so unhide files by clicking in any folder Tools > Folder Options > View and scroll down and tick Show Hidden Files and Folder and OK, then click My Computer and open the C: Drive and do you see an MSOCache or MSO folder?

Buying the upgrade version might not be the best choice. An Office 2007 upgrade should work fine for upgrading your current installation of Office 2000 but what would you do if you ever need to format your hard drive and reinstall all your software? If that happened, you would not be able to install Office 2007 without the presence of Office 2000 to verify you're qualified to own an upgrade version of Office 2007.

So, I think you should either buy the full edition of Office 2007 OR use some drive imaging tool such as Acronis TrueImage to create a disk image, which would include your Office 2000, that you could use to restore your system if needed.

Halo, I could not find the MSOCache or MSO folder at all.

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy the whole program. So much for saving some money.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi

Pitty on not finding that folder, at times you can use the installers their as they mirror the ones on CD.

Options are try getting a replacement copy of Office 2000 if that version works ok for you, going to be cheaper than going with Office 2007, did quick search of Amazon

If your current PC is Windows XP SP2 or above and is quick then Office 2007 is good IMO, I love it but it may take a little getting used to as menus are gone and replaced by a ribbon, which I find easy to navigate, also if your a student/teacher or have kids that are students and dont need the full applications list of Office, look into the Home and Student version some info here on various versions and some prices. If you work for a government dept check if they allow you to get Office via licencing agreement as in UK many Gov employees can get MSFT products and Office for cost of postage and media, its a Home User Program, maybe same where you are.... know your user nick is chefcarla, but never know you could work for gov agency.

Final alternative is to go with a Open Office which is free from Sun Microsystems and mirrors Excel and Office apps very well, could just use it for Excel or its Calc app, opens Excel files fine.

Cannot sadly think of a workaround without you getting hold of an Office 2000 cd to fix this as an update or addon in Excel is asking for the installer files to complete.

I thought about purchasing either the Home/Student and the Standard versions but I want Access and Publisher upgraded as well. However, I am not looking forward to the ribbon thing.

I'll just save a few more pennies and buy the whole, big Pro version. There isn't that much difference in price.........yeah, maybe if I say that loud enough, I'll believe it, eh?

I found this website accidentally when I was going to culinary school and needed to put together a Powerpoint on computer security for a class. Everyone here has been a great help with any question I've asked and have never made me feel like the idiot I can be when it comes to stuff like this. But, I am learning thanks to people like you!!

    Hi

Nah the Ribbon thing is fine, actually after a few days of using its very intuitive and icons are easier IMO to see what you actually want, saves the old way of going through a menu then submenu and if you use shortcut keys then they work the same.

Hahah on price of Pro, yes the full suite versions are good and Powerpoint and Access are good in 2007, but comes at a price!

    Will help on ribbon menus

If you are still a student or might be taking more classes, you could save a lot of money if you could get the software at academic pricing. This usually involves buying the software at a college bookstore and, of course, requires verification of student status. While taking a class at Columbus State Community College, I bought Office 2007 Pro for $199; I believe that's less than half the normal retail price.

I'm actually done with school but that is a good idea. I have friend in nursing school who could probably get it for me. Great idea!! Thanks, usafveteran!
