For Christmas my oldest son got me this wonderful malware. I decided I wanted to return it, but it seems to be stuck... I have done all of the steps set forth in the READ & RUN ME FIRST section, but seem to still have one part that won't go away. I'm attaching the SAS, MBAM, Combofix and MGlogs.zip in this post and the next reply. Any help is very, very much appreciated!

Is Counterspy a paid for version? If not, you should uninstall it.

    You also need to uninstall:
Viewpoint Media Player ---> in the instructions from the Read and Run FIrst!

It is not a good idea to allow all users to be administrators!

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    c:\windows\Tasks\etcrclof.job

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file and tell me how things are running.

    No. Removed

    Missed that one, sorry.

Agreed, there will be discussions with those who changed their accounts....

All other steps completed. The computer appears to be running well, with no evidence of any popups or other activity. However, SAS still shows the 27 registry entries for Vundo/MsJuan. Logs are attached.

Thank you again for your help!

What I would like you to do is to run SAS and MBAM on each of the other user accounts. Attach the logs that show malware with the name of each account in the title.

I ran MBAM and SAS while logged in as each user. The logs showing infections are attached in this and subsequent posts. After running the 5th login/run/reboot sequence the MBAM and SAS logs started coming back clean. I ran SAS and MBAM on the remaining users, including my admin account, and none showed any of the registry entries.

And how are things running now?

( Do please set the other users to power users instead of administrators...).

Everything appears to be running well. No pop ups, no apparent degradation to system performance. I re-ran SAS and MBAM on the accounts that previously showed infection, and they appear to be clear as well.

I changed all other accounts to limited and then added them to the power user group. Thanks for mentioning the power users group; I wasn't aware that was an option, since XP only discloses limited and admin in the general user dialogue.

    Thanks!

    You are very welcome.....

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you so much for your help!

Is there any chance that SAS and MBAM will conflict with McAfee? McAfee had me uninstall AdAware and Spybot previously because of a conflict. Clearly McAfee alone is not doing the trick, but I don't want to lose virus protection because of a conflict.

    Thanks.

Both SAS and MBAM freeware versions are not active scanners....you have to invoke the scans. And they will not interfere with McAfee. I am assuming you paid for Mcafee...because otherwise I would suggest uninstalling it and installing a freeware AV such as Avast.

I misunderstood the recommendation, I thought you were suggesting buying the full versions. I will keep the free ones.

I did pay for it, but I can also choose not to renew.

    Thanks again!

That would be something to consider when the time comes.....most all Anti-virus suites are resource hogs.

    And you are most welcome.
