Uninstall Linux and install Win2000

Hi,
My son was given a laptop with linux on it. We want to put Win2000 on it so we can hook up to wireless. Plus he doesn't like the Linux. I know how to install Windows normally but how do I do it with Linux on there. My son is bringing his laptop to me this weekend. Thanks for any help you can give me.

It's an older Dell. Inspiron I believe. It came with Win98 on it but it crashed and the guy didn't have a 98 CD. So he put Linux on it. I was going to put 98 back on it but found out that the wireless PCMCIA card won't work with 98. So I found a copy of 2000. I am not familiar with Linux. And I've never worked on Win2000. But I have worked with all other Windows except Vista. Thanks. Lisa

 

I think the laptop is a Inspiron 1000. I called my son to check for sure but their power is out. I gave him the card off my laptop. I can't remember the brand but I do know it will work with Win2000. I don't know which version of Linux it is though. They live a good distance away and I wont see them until Saturday. I just need to know how to get the Linux off and Windows back on. He tried just putting the Win2000 CD in but it wouldn't run. I can't tell you much more until I actually get the laptop here where I can work with it. Thanks. And Happy New Year!

 

Did he go into the BIOS and change the boot order first so that the system will then look for the CD drive first to boot from? If that's the case then installing will be a breeze, given that drivers are available as said above.

 

I don't think he knows how to. I do. But somebody told me that you had to have a special program to get Windows back on with Linux. Thanks.

 

Nah, from the install CD, just format everything first, it'll destroy whatever's there. Mind you that's XP, I don't have experience with 2K. HTH

 

same with w2k, once you boot with the disk just delete the partitions (there may be 3) and then format the whole hdd to NTFS,
the options are presented when you boot from the windows cd,

i use windows 2000 and have done this a few times after i break thingsrolleyes
