Ok I just noticed my Task Manager is there....but not there? ie.(cant right click on frame to make changes) Anyway I posted A log in Malware Removal to see if something is wrong and this pretty much confirms something is up. Now should I try some of the links provided here to fix the issue OR should I try to figure out whats going on with this system first ? Oh I'm running XP home edition and if specs are needed I'll provide them upon request. HAPPY NEW YEAR :wine (GOAL 4 2009= Drink more fine wine)

    Hi

Never thought you could right click on the frame (border) or Task Manager to make changes, only rightclick option is on highlighting a process or service.

Is it your menu tabs are missing> if so double click (left mouse button) near the edge of the Task Manager frame.

Or screenshot of what your trying to do and whats missing may help.

*I may have read your question wrong as a lost in translation type thing*

Sorry I wasn't more specific and yes it was my menu tabs that were missing. Your advice worked to restore things but I ran into another snag that I need an answer to. I tried running gpedit.msc to see if the taskman was disabled or what but when I done that I got a message stating that "Windows cannot find the gpedit.msc file" so as I'm determined to figure this out I'll keep posting. I've still yet to get a response on my logs and I think the answer might lie within them. Thanks for help.

    Hi

Glad that all it was was the missing tabs as I had weird feeling it may have been something worse.

As for gpedit.msc its not in XP Home so you wouldnt see it sadly, http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307882 while if you search around some may say that just copy XP Pros gpedit file, their is more to that console than just that file, and I know some have gotten it to work in XP Home, but the console is limited and could result in instability of the OS. Reason it was left out is that that version was not designed to enter a domain so domain tools where left out.

Policy references are and can be set in the registry but they would have to be done manually, not a task I would suggest if not really confident aroudn the registry.

For taskmanager (taskmgr.exe) you could check this location of the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system and look for in the right pane for DisableTaskMgr key if its there then if it has a value of 1=Enable (ergo disabled) and 0=Disabled (enabled and not blocked)

If no key if there then policy has not been set.

If you have Malware logs on the go I would await an all clear on them as issues you have could be caused by other things and trying too many various things may confuse the malware removals process as you'd be adding other variables.

Man I just love all this input ! I had no idea about the difference between the two OS's. I knew there were differences, but to what extent I had few clues. As for me making changes in the registry I feel fairly confident that I could accomplish that, but it stays in my mind about what my instructor told us " change this at your own risk". Yeah I do have logs posted that I'm awaiting an all clear on (or not) B4 I do anything else so I'll be patient and await the results. Appreciate the help and Long Live MajorGeeks!!!

    Hi

Yes I would wait for all clear first before tackling any other issues, as if its malware related you could be chasing your tail for any fix as the malware could be causing it.

No problems just glad to pass on a few tips and things.

Personally I don't know in how to prevent the tabs from disappearing since I never had this problem and don't know how it originated. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than I will be able to answer your question?
