Error Message on Boot

    Introduction:
I got rid of an HP 6310 (Ugh) and installed a new Epson Workforce 500 Printer. After uninstalling HP, I also deleted some games on my computer that were taking too much of my time. I deleted them through the "start - all programs - games- (select a game) - right click delete" route.

Deleting - or getting rid of - - or uninstalling (whatever floats your boat) HP is no picnic even when uninstalling properly through “HP Uninstall” instead of “Add-Remove Programs”. I still have HP trash all over the place and some of it tries to interfere with operations. I WILL get rid of it if I have to reach in and grab each one by the throat.

    Resulting Problem:
As I deleted the games, I thought it was possible I was screwing up my machine because of the way electrons are shared with other programs. I was right. Upon re-boot (which I do every night to keep the computer jazzed), I kept getting an error message that said "WZCSLDR2.exe - Unable to Locate Component.” Alongside the red circle with a white “x” in it, the message read, “This application has failed to start because wlanapi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.” Underneath that statement was a raised bar with “OK” in it. If you press (click on) the bar, the message disappears and the computer operates as if there is nothing wrong.

    Solution:
I tried everything I could think of to get rid of the message - even tried to look up a solution somewhere in Major Geeks. After a couple of days of this, I decided to do a System Restore. I was warned not to use this method to clean up my computer mistakes but the whole reason I am writing this is, to tell you it worked. The games are back but I am leaving them alone. The HP trash will have to be treated separately as cleverness directs

    Request:
The most persistent HP pest left over so far is an attempt to install “HP Document Viewer 6.1.” It refuses to stop trying. This is the first listing of HP programs in the "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. It is possible that if I succeed in getting rid of it, the next one in line, "HP Imagining Device Functions 6.1" could be the next pest. If anyone has a sure-fire method for clean up from this point, I am ready to read it and try it.

    Thank you

    Petaluma:

Thank you very much for your reply. I have some version of CCleaner on my computer now - frapper put me on to it. Almost never (read, "never") used it since the original download (blush). I will look for updates for what I have and use it later. I have opened the instructions and copy/pasted them to Open Office to read and follow. The site you sent me to has several programs to download. I am assuming you meant this one -

CCleaner Free Download - Official Win® Tool Scans And Fixes Your PC Instantly. 100% Guaranteed

I think it will be a good idea for me to write a list and keep it nearby to prompt me to keep my computer free of junk.

God bless you and thank you again.

    Reghakr:

I have been trying to write you since this morning to thank you for trying to help me and to tell you I tried the Revo Uninstaller. To make a very long story short, I had to do a couple of System Restores. I hate to do that because it means I gave up on something instead of fixing it.

I just checked - I did take Revo Uninstller off my computer. Now, don't go into a corner with all your complexes coming out - it probably is a very good program but it did not solve my particular HP problem - or, if it solved something, it changed the problem I had.

I am now BUGGED by a thing that comes up over and over again in about 3 seconds after I close it. I once had to pull the plug on the computer itself to shut it down.

I went to the HP Officejet 6310 manual (I still had it) and it gave me 3 choices to uninstall.
    1. Go to start-all programs-HP-uninstall
    2. Go to Add/Remove Programs-delete entries for HP
    3. Uninstall from the CD/ROM

I tried one and two in various combinations. I got rid of everything except
    HP Imaging Device Functions 6.1
HP PSC & Office Jet 6.1
hp psc 700 series (Yes, I wrote it exactly as listed - small letters and all - it is a very old program - I got rid of the printer years ago)

I cannot uninstall from the CD because I gave it to a friend with the printer. I will get it back if I have to.

I have another problem that grew out of all this. About every 3 seconds the computer tries to re-install something called a "DocumentViewer (one word). I get Error Message 1706 which says, "No valid source could be found for product DocumentViewer. The Windows Installer cannot continue."

I click it off and it shuts down by backing off to zero from as far as it went. About 3 seconds later it starts up again and stops at the same place. If I set it aside I can still use my computer - like now - but it is so persistent, it is a problem to turn off the computer.

A few minutes ago I downloaded Hijack This. It turns out it is a program called "Registry Mechanic." I am so chicken about the Registry I could lay eggs. I ran it and it says I have bunches of problems. I think those programs could find problems if I hooked it up to a piano.

It is asking me to register now to clean the computer up. Well - - - -I'm a-gonna do it. If you don't hear from me for a while, I'm out buying a new computer.

Thanks again - and as my morning message started out - Happy New Year.

Gonna go to bed soon :zzz

    To Anyone:

I think Major Geeks is doing a clever thing. It keeps it's boat afloat by recommending presumably researched programs for us know-nothings to buy. It probably helps to pay for keeping the service alive. I personally think it is a wise thing to do. Some of tech helps go broke because they just try to operate on their own - like CPfools.

What I would like to suggest is, put the price on the suggested program up front. We already know the freebies are never any good. They just lead you on to get the big bucks. Also, are your ratings for the products and programs honest or are they hype from the ultimate sellers? We don't care - we just want to know how believable they are. Every single one of the TV ads without any exception lies to you. Let us know how highly you regard your own name.

Ya know what I did Reghakr?

After doing everything I knew how to do (and some that I didn't) I talked to a friend and followed his suggestion - - - which was load up the software for the HP Officejet 6310 back on my computer and delete it from the Add/Remove programs thingy.

Actually, I only did half of it. I loaded the software back on by going to the HP website, downloading the software and running the download. I rebooted and all the problems went away. I will now ignore it.

I deleted all the desktop shortcuts to HP. Then I went to Control Panel/Printers and Faxes to be sure my new Epson Workforce 500 was the default printer. It, in fact, was the only printer listed because (I suspect) I didn't have a printer to connect during the software loading process. Loading the software allowed me to connect the hardware at a later time. I went to the Add/Remove Programs list and added the MB HP takes up. I now have 915.95 MB of printer software on my computer that I will never use.

I have a 200G hard drive divided into segments of 137 and 63 gigs so, there is room to hide it.

I'm not sure what I will do with the hair I pulled out over this. I suppose I could gather it all up and glue it back on or make a pillow.

Maybe some day someone will come along and invite Bill Gates and the HP executives to dinner and do a successful "Valkyrie" on them. Thousands,no, millions will cheer.

No, I don't like having all that on my computer but I do have a computer that works - at least until the next re-boot.

    Thank you again,
    Jack

    Reghakr:

I added a PS to my note but MG wouldn't let me process it because I ran out of time.

I will delete the freebie Registry Mechanic as you suggest but, I must admit, it shows promise. Some day probably soon, I will buy a registry cleaner upper. If I am forking over real money I will want the best I can get. At my age, money is no object (don't let my wife see this). RM seems like it would fit the bill. Waddya think?

    Jack

PS. Now that things have taken this turn, all your questions seemed moot. If you like, I will still answer them all. Let me know. And again, many many thanks for the helping hand.

Hi Jack, and welcome to Majorgeeks.com

I wanted to respond to your post here since you took the time to let us know your suggestions.

All downloads at MajorGeeks.com already state clearly whether the product is shareware (you pay for it) or freeware (you get it for free). Let's take for example the link Petaluma gave you to CCLeaner http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html If you look 4 lines down in the left-hand column where it says "License" this will either let you know if it is freeware or shareware, and if the latter, now much it will cost you to purchase.

As to freebies never being any good, at MajorGeeks.com all software applications available for download are tried and tested by the owners before being made available. They are tested for effectiveness and potential issues beforehand, so that members can download them with assurance that they are good applications. We like to assist members in saving money whereever possible and using a free application when possible or prefered, rather than spending hundreds of dollars when a free application will do just the same thing. For example, you can safely clean and protect your computer from malware without having to spend a cent!

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

The ratings you see with each downloadable software application are ratings given by Majorgeeks.com members who have downloaded and used the application. You can see next to the rating how many members in total rated that specific application too. Ratings are not provided by the software sellers themselves.

I hope this answers some of the questions you have satisfactorily. Let me Know if you have any further questions :)

Thank you for setting me straight. I am so used to being jazzed about this and that I have let myself get cynical. I forgot I am among the real pros now and I need to get comfortable with you folks. I think I have lots of pleasurable times ahead. It is really different seeing products with honest appraisals.

    Thank you again,

One of the people who has been helping me was someone called reghakr. He made several postings and now all of them have been deleted.

Um - - - I don't know if I offended him or not or if he chose to take himself off Major Geeks.

I suspect from his user name that he works, or used to work, with a company that builds or designs registry software. I found his postings most helpful. I wanted to thank him for his help but, as I said, his postings are gone.

    Whatlido?

    Thank you,

    Lev:

I am continuing to pursue your suggestions and, so far, this is what I have found. This note is intended to inform, not to express anger.

    I went to:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650

I was so impressed with the information I sent a link to a friend. Then I tried to do, one-by-one, what Major Attitude said to do. I have done following things so far and this is what I found.

    1. Remove programs you no longer use or knew about:

I deleted some things I felt knowledgeable enough to trust what I was doing. I did not dare touch anything that had to do with HP. It worked fine.

    2. Cleaning your hard drive of unneeded files.
I clicked on the link http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_...ish_d4191.html

    2a. I saw this:

    Are Your Drivers Updated?
Avoid PC Hardware Problems. Scan Here!

I ran the program that was, indeed, a free scan. It told me I had 6 drivers that were out of date. It also told me that if I wanted to update the drivers, I would have to buy the rest of the program. I felt “fleeced.” It seemed to be a bait and switch approach.

    2b. I saw this:

Recommended Download: Click Here to Check for System Problems

I ran the program that checked for problems. It was free but I had to buy something to fix what it found. I have been thinking about buying Registry Mechanic anyway and thought that now was a good time. In the process of buying Registry Mechanic I found the following.

"Automatic Protection Subscription - By proceeding with the Automatic Protection option, you agree to allow us to automatically extend your right to receive support and updates for the product for successive periods equal to the length of the initial term by directly charging your credit card or debiting your debit card prior to each anniversary of the date of purchase for an amount that is no greater than PC Tools' then-current price of the Product, excluding promotional and discount pricing. If no initial term is specified, the initial term will be one (1) year from the purchase date. You may terminate your subscription at any time by contacting our customer service team at billing@pctools.com at least twenty (20) days prior to any anniversary date. For the full text of our Purchase Terms and Conditions click here.

Please select a payment method before continuing"

I deleted the purchase because I believe it is telling me it can continually charge my credit car/debit card for continued protection. On the surface, this sounds like what Dick Morris calls, “Fleeced.”

    2c. I saw this:
CCleaner Free Download - Official Win® Tool Scans And Fixes Your PC Instantly. 100% Guaranteed

I opened it and found a sales pitch for a gazillion wonder programs and realized there was nothing “free” about any of them. I felt fleeced.

    2d. I saw this:
CCleaner Download - Free - Optimizes Your PC in 3 Easy Steps 100% Free Download - Get It!

My son has RegCure and likes the program so I thought I would try it

I downloaded the free run and told me I had a bunch of problems. If I wanted to fix them, I would have to register. I filled out the register form and it told me I could buy the fix for around $30.00. I felt fleeced.

I quit the page and went back to Major Attitude to try the next fix.

    3. Remove invalid registry entries:

    http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_...ish_d4191.html

It pushes CCleaner. Been there, done that.

    I gave up.

Now, back to my original statement -
”We already know the freebies are never any good. They just lead you on to get the big bucks.”

I must be doing something wrong. I am pretty sure you would not intentionally mislead me. You can either help me or drop me like a hot potato. Your choice with no hard feelings either way.

You make me feel warm all over knowing you won't easily give up on me. I appreciate that very much. I will do my best to make sense and give as much information as I know how to do so that you will have minimum frustration in answering my future problems - if, indeed, you will be the one answering some of my questions.

PS I have an Avatar that I would like to use. It is a picture of a golden Phoenix rising out of the ashes. I realize the name "phoenix" has already been assigned with a small "p" back in 02-05-03 with no further action on his/her part. It is dead.

My question, which is probably totally illegal for you, is this - Since I did not catch the fact that, once I sign on, I am known by whatever I signed on with is my identity for life. I went blithely on thinking I could change it when I scanned to see what was available. So, I signed on with no originality.

If this is a hard and fast rule, I will live with it. Buuuuuuutttt - it would be nice if I could take over for phoenix (with a small "p") or even make it a capital "P".

My reason is, I am a born-again Christian and the Phoenix is emblematic of my life.

Please say, "No" softly. You may scream a "Yes."

Let's address the issue of teh downloads you are seeing, because this still isn't right and I am convinced you are viewing some of the advertisements and clicking on those, instead of the MajorGeeks free downloads. So let's walk you through the CCleaner download.

Click on this link to download CCleaner Slim http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html You will see this screen.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/Atkin/ScreenHunter_01Jan031344.gif

You need to focus in on the part under the Downloads heading. It looks like this:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/Atkin/ScreenHunter_02Jan031344.gif

Click on one of the Texas or Florida links to download and just follow the instructions that pop up as you download and install this. I assure you it is totally free and an awesome piece of very reliable and accurate software. I have personally used it on many computers hundreds of times. Let me know how this goes for you.

As to changing your nick here at MajorGeeks, this is not something we generally do as everyone might want to do this at some point and as Administrators we would never get anything else done ;) I will, however, draw this to the attention of the forum owners who have final say in these matters. Not sure P/phoenix would be possible even if the user account is inactive, as we do not close accounts simply because members haven't logged on recently. They are often back when the next problem hits ;) Plus the original phoenix member is in my state...not sure I could do that to a fellow Oregonian :p

    Lev:

Thank you yet again for your post. I found that the top listing for Florida did not work but the bottom one did.

I ran the Ccleaner for "cleaner" and "registry" and it seems just fine. When I got to the "Tools" and "Options" part I freaked out because it listed things I thought might be deleted. I will experiment later.

I went to your personal site and was overjoyed for you. I have to prepare for tomorrow's Bible class so I will have to read it more thoroughly later. I have been told by the doctor not to preach for a while, though, which gives me a little more time than I am used to having.

How wonderful to have met you.
