what kind of sound card do you have , what is the model of your gateway.
Check device manager and look for a yellow mark next to any of the item and post back.

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major

First install your chipset drivers. You can download them from this link. Restart the PC when the install has finished. Then download KB888111; it's the Microsoft HD Audio update, also called the UAA update. You can download it from this direct link. After installing it, install the RealTek Hi-Def audio drivers. You can download them right here at Major Geeks using this link. Restart the PC when the audio driver install has completed.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes! If you run into problems or have more questions, you know where to find us!

Some units have an integrated sound card (part of the motherboard) and some have them installed as a seperate card iin a slot. Either way you will have plug-ins in the back for the speaker and microphone usually with little pictures of mic and headphones beside them. If you turn off the power you can open the case usually by removing a couple screws and look inside where those same plug-ins are and actually see a seperate card that fits into a slot about 2" x 6" approx. if it is seperate it is distinctly visible. Integrated is actually part of the motherboard with wires running to the plug-ins. Keep you fingers out of there at this point and look with your eyes.

Do you have SP2 or SP3? If you have SP3, you need to 'trick' it into thinking you have SP2 by using the steps described in this thread. If you have SP2, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any sound drivers listed. Reboot. Then use TUGzip to extract the sound driver you downloaded earlier. TUGzip can extract RAR files, ZIP files, 7zip files, many EXE files, and just about any archive or self-extracting archive you're likely to encounter. When installing TUGzip just click 'Next' all the way through. At the end of the install, there will be a little check-box for "Launch TUGzip"; go ahead and launch it; click "Next" all the way through again until you see a "Finish" button; there will be a column on the left side with a bunch of different archive formats; click the "Select All" button; click "Finish". A window will open that looks like an Explorer-type window, close it. Right click the file you downloaded (the file you want to extract) and click the 2nd upward pointing green arrow, it will say something like "Extract to: .\filename" and the file will extract to a folder of the same name. Then use the steps described in this thread to install the sound driver via the Device Manager. As to the other driver issues: a screen shot of the Device Manager would be helpful as would an Everest report (use the info in this thread to attach an Everest report to a future post).

:-o Sorry... my bad.... SP stands for "Service Pack". Service Pack 3 has known problems with KB888111. Basically, KB888111 was created for SP2 and does not work correctly with SP3. To find out which Service Pack (SP) you have, right click on 'My Computer' and click 'Properties'. The System Properties window that opens will show the Service Pack (see screen shot below).
