I just wanted to share this with all the geeks!! I have been a member here for a short time and it has been nothing but great! The knowledge and patience of all that have helped me in the past is something that I am forever thankful for:)

With that all said.....I just started taking a CompTia A+ class this week! I am so excited about getting some formal computer training that I have just been beside myself:-D

When I spoke with the Director a few weeks ago and was asked what my level of skill was I told him that everything that I know I have learned on my own and when I had a tough problem I would go to the Majorgeeks forum to get answers. He told me he knew of the forum and that is was a great place for information and help!!

So, maybe sometime in the near future I will be able to contribute more to this forum instead of always asking questions:) Thanks again to everyone!!! Happy Holidays!!!! KathyM

Congrats and good luck to you Kathy. :)

This is definitely a good place to learn and a nice compliment to formal training. It's pretty cool that he knew of MGs.

Thanks!! I too thought it was pretty cool that he knew MG's as well! I certainly will keep you posted as to my progress....so far (2classes) I have kept the instructor quite busy with answering my questions!! I guess that is why I have always had the nickname "Chatty Kathy" :-D

Hi Kathy glad to hear youre taking classes for A+! It's a great start to a whole world of information. You never really stop learning in the computer field as there are SO many aspects to IT that one can never be an expert in it all. Being even a small part in the MG community is very rewarding and i'm glad to be here as well. Hope to see you around in the hardware section! Happy Holidays!

Don't worry, answering questions is the teachers job. I always enjoyed bugging the History Teacher, asking questions about just about everything. Fortunately he was a nice guy and didn't mind.

    Great stuff "chatty" Kathy :)

Questions Questions Questions, always worth asking as if you dont know how will you learn, and wouldnt worry about asking what may seem simple questions either. I agree with KingSteve, so many areas of computing to learn so overall knowledge is good, but also specialising in specific areas reap rewards too.

I wish you well on your course and yes as mentioned, you'll be able to expand your knowedge here and also help folk along the way with your new found tech skills.

    :)

Just wanted to give an update regarding school - I have built my first computer and it was a great feeling to turn it on and it worked :-D

    It is a Centurion A+ 534 case with a S-series MAGM-S2HP motherboard
    cpu is a AMD athlon x2 64
MSI R3450 ATI Radeon graphics - dual core cell
    Thermaltake TR2-430W power supply
We have installed Windows XP SP2.

It is great to have 250G hard drive and 1G mem. When I have been used to working on my home computer of only 20G and 384 MB mem....what a big difference!

It has been very interesting to learn from the bottom up and I am certainly looking forward to more!!

I have also turned all the students (there are 13 in class) on to the MG website - they were amazed when they went onto the site and seen all the forums as well as all the freeware. One student went crazy and downloaded tons of stuff:-D

So, that all being said.....thanks again fellow geeks!!!!

Congrats! Happy to hear you've been successful in your studies. Building a computer for the first time is a great feeling when you turn it on and it works. I remember building my first computer in my A+ class in college. i had a :-D when i got the OS installed. Keep it up!

Are you going to be looking for a job in the field or just doing it for knowledge?

I, also, am taking the A+ class this semester. I am doing it online, and having a harder time than I thought. I would rather work with the software than the hardware.
Last semester, I took MCDST Exam #70-272 class and Aced that, but only two weeks into this one, I better buckle down.

Guess we won't be competing for jobs. I am in Minnesota.....:-D

It is pretty intimidating when you first start, that's for sure! The hands on as well as having a pretty computer tech savvy instructor (who has 15 certs) also helps. What book are you using online? I have the A+ guide to managing and maintaining your PC, sixth edition. Although this is from 2006 and some of the hardware is now obsolete it is the schools thought that we as tech's might come across some of the older computers and we will know how to troubleshoot the problems.

It does get a bit easier as you go along......I spend 12-14 hrs a week in our schools lab just to read and play around with the hardware in my computer.

If there is anything that I can help you with just give me a shout! KathyM

I am actually in computer lab right now and going over the first 5 chapters to make sure that I am certain of things.....it is nice and quiet! You will do well and like I said if there is anything I can help you with just give a shout!! KathyM

Hi everyone!! School is going great! We have another 5 weeks of A+ and then it is test time and then we go into network+. It has been a grind but I love it!!

As I mentioned somewhere in my earlier posts that I have given MG's to all the students in my class. They were so surprised to see all the freeware and were so delighted that I shared this forum with them:-D

But, last week 2 of my fellow students said that they posted in the forum and one said that no one responded to her post and the other student said that what he posted no one helped him.....I was taken aback at that as I have always been helped with the smallest to the largest of problems that I have run into and everyone has been MORE than helpful......I was at a loss of what to tell them - I still am proud to be a part of this forum and will continue to pass the word on about how great this forum is!!! I love it:heart

Congrats on doing well and still loving the course.

Depends where the issues where posted and if someone actually had a clue on what they where after, if posted in Welcome Center then a question maybe missed their as many of the ones who can help dont view that area, I tend to glance over it and move what I can to right area.

Times it depends whos online as its not a paid job and many (including myself) do have other things too attend to, and if the forum threads mount up and theirs goto say page 3 or 4 then it can get missed, if its the malware forum then it can at present take a longer time than we would like to get those issues as malware is increasing in users affected, but all in malware forum are working flat out.

They could just pop in a post in their threads to say, I still have this issue, and if they have tried any other steps to resolve these state what they have tried or any error messages or new info as it may jog someones memory in said issues. As you say normally majority of threads and questions get picked up fairly quickly.

Morning - I just wanted to let you know that one student thought she had registered and posted but in fact nothing was posted. The other student told me that he has posted and was very happy with the help he has gotten. As a matter of fact he told me yesterday that his wife asks him if he is on the "geek" site again :) All is good with them and with MG's. All the students in my class go to the site to get downloads (they are not registered though).

Also, our director told us about another website with great downloads and we checked it out and it doesn't compare to what this site has to offer......

Thanks again Halo!!!! Have a great day!!

    Hi Kathy

Quick tip on remembering things and one I tend to use in work is to as you ate going along in any task is to make quick bullet points on a topic and a quick brief outline as to any relevent info ad this helps jog my memory into remembering the steps and more detailed info.

For troubleshooting I tend to use notepad and jot down the question and any reply I have posted that fix an issue and title the doc accordingly as it's easy to search for and as we cannot remember everything it's a good way to store previous issues and answers, then over time you'll just start going "I remember that one" hunt down the doc and then it's quick to post the potential answer/fix

Also a week or so before the test give yourself a break as you can burn out before the test, take a few days off from learning this stuff then when fresh and alert go over your course notes a few days before test and they will hopefully be fresh in your mind before the exam

If all else fails to pray to the AlmightyMegahertz you need a full moon, a PC then darken the room, stand on one leg spin around three times by hoping on the one foot and growl like a bear :)
