I have recently replaced the motherboard in my PC with another that is the exact same model - MSI K7N2. All other hardware is the same. Now the system is only recognizing half the memory, my 512 chips show up as 256.

I know these chips are compatible as they worked in the other motherboard. For good measure I have already tried reseating the chips, using other slots, and updating the bios. Oh, and the memory is Kingstion 512 PC3200. Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance....

Does that mobo support up to 512MB?

i assume that this is your motherboard, it says it supports up to 3 gigs of memory.

"Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability." - from the page. maybe an incorrect BIOS setting somewhere is messing things up? either that or one of the RAM sticks got damaged during the motherboard transfer. you might want to test each individual stick to see if both work.

You're right thats exactly my model. I have tried individually testing the sticks and with only one inserted and it shows as 256 - the same result for both. I've gone over by BIOS setting several times and can't seem to find anyting that might remedy this. Tommorrow I'll look a bit closer at those setting yet again and see if there is anything I can come up with.

I used an MSI K7N2-G (nforce2) motherboard for quite a few years. Rock solid board, and I went thru a few processor and memory upgrades with it. I never had to mess with the bios settings (except for overclocking ;)) as it always recognized the new stuff. I understand the board is a replacement? If it is used it may faulty or may have been improperly handled. ESD (static) is a silent killer. Have you tried to remove the cmos battery? It looks like a big watch battery. Unplug the tower, remove the battery and wait 20 minutes or so. This completely resets the bios, you'll have to reset time/day/fsb etc. but as I well know, that motherboard will automatically detect the ram and processor type. You could also try flashing your bios, I know at one point that there was an updated bios for mine.
