My Wireless Network

When I play video games online, I often get disconnected (Whether I'm using the wireless signal or using an RJ-45 cable with the wireless router.). When I'm downloading a large file online, where it needs a long time to download, it stops before it's completed. When I'm surfing the web, I sometimes can't load web pages for a short period of time.

It has to be my ISP, the modem, or the router, as the cables are all checked.

I'm running a ping test on the router, and every once in a while, the ping time goes from ~1 msec to 14 or 15 msec. Could that be a sign of the problem?

    If not, what could be?

    New information:

What if it shot up a few times to 60, 71, and 90 msec?

Also, my downstream SNR is fluctuating between 38 and 40 dB, which means there's nothing wrong there.

I'm sure you have done this, but JIC, have you tried to connect directly to your ISP's modem? By any chance, are you using dish for ISP? if you're using cable and the problem persists, you should call ISP and make them send you a new one. I had same problem with comcast and they tried and tried. Nothing. I told them it's the modem but since it works most of the time, they wouldn't send me a new one. Finally, i poured water on it, dried it, and told them it doesn't power-on. Got the new one. Everything is sweet and flawless.

I apologize for the late response.

Yes, I have tried to connect the computer directly to the modem, and it worked flawlessly. I am using cable (Time Warner), not satellite.

It's weird though that whether I use the router wired or wireless, the problem exists. I'm sure that statement would narrow down the causes.

I may go ahead and buy a new router for $40 and see, but I wanted to be able to fix it instead.

ok, then you already know where the problem is - Router. That's good news.
Did you try to reset the router to factory default? If so, you should try to use it with minimal security settings and disable the wireless first. If it works great, then add security settings one by one and you'll know what went wrong. If it still gives you heart burn, go get a new one. That one's probably defective.

I had my Home Network going through a Wireless G Linksys Router and experienced the same problems. I am a big fan of Xbox Live so when I would try and get on line it would constantly boot me off, then log me back in. Just when I was just getting "back in the fight!" :major it would boot me off again...not cool dude.

So I decided to upgrade to a wireless N router and WOW!!! It was the difference between day and night.

N routers are a little steeper than G's, not to mention you'll have to make sure your NIC is compatible otherwise that's another upgrade, but well worth it!

    Hope that helps.
